Highland Recorder March 24, 1922 The remains of Mrs. Kenton T. Shumate, who died last Thursday evening at her home near Hot Springs, were brought to Monterey for burial on Sunday. The hearse, in charge of Messers Loving and McLaughlin, undertakers, was detained by a break down and did not reach here until late Saturday night, other members of the funeral party arriving in the evening. Mrs. Shumate was a victim of pneumonia and her death had been expected for several days. Her maiden name was Moyers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Moyers, of Cave, W. Va. and she was about 36 years of age. Since her marriage to Mr. Shumate, some six or seven years ago, she had resided at or near the Hot Springs. She is survived by her husband and three small children. Her pastor. Rev. R. O. Hipes, of the Methodist church, accompanied the remains and conducted the funeral at the Monterey Methodist church at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. R. D. McNeer assisting. Mr. Hipes extolled the virtues of Mrs. Shumate, referring to her as one of the sweetest tempered woman he had ever known, a devoted wife and mother and a devout christian. Mr. Shumate is a native of Monterey, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. T A. Shumate, and his friends here heartily sympathize with him in his great bereavement. Near relatives of Mrs. Shumate who were present were Mr. and Mrs. Peter Moyers, father and mother, Frank Moyers, of Pendleton county, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Hall, of Elkins, W. Va., Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Simmons, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Simmons, of Mount Solon. Interment was in Monterey cemetery.
