Read More	Hamden Memorial Funeral Home Luray Beers ( June 19, 1944 - September 13, 2017 ) Luray Dudley Esten Beers, 73, of Old Saybrook, CT, the self-appointed leader of the Dudley Avenue Branch of the Department of Homeland Security, and occasional Edith Head impersonator, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2017. She would like you to believe that she was still 29 years old. Luray was born on June 19, 1944, in Rockford, IL, to Leroy and Juanita Esten. She graduated from West High School in 1962 and attended college in Arizona. She married Donald Billiau in 1966 and soon welcomed Drew and Christopher. Her children remember her as a loving and caring mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals. Passionate about giving back to the community, Luray served on many boards, including: the Boards of Trustees of Rockford College, Rockford Memorial Hospital, and Keith School, chairing committees and providing valuable leadership. Her most recent position was that of President of the Old Saybrook Chamber of Commerce in 2002-03. Regularly seated at her reserved table at Penny Lane Pub, Luray was often seen reading only the most vulgar of books of ill repute. Not shy about inquiring into the lives of others, Luray routinely could be overheard asking intimate and personal questions of complete strangers, and fellow diners; she would often follow these exchanges with her boisterous and well-known laugh. Luray is survived by her sons Andrew Billiau of Abington, PA, and Christopher Billiau and his wife Jill, of Thetford Center, VT; grandchildren, Saylor, Hugo, and August; and her more-sister-than-cousin, Bunny York and her husband Dennis of The Villages, FL, and Waterford, CT; as well as a number of cousins in CT and RI. She was preceded in death by her husband James Beers in 2001, and her beloved dog, Dudley James, earlier this year. A private ceremony will be held at Cypress Cemetery, at which Amazing Grace will not be sung. A reception will follow at her favorite spot to people watch, Penny Lane Pub, in Old Saybrook, on September 23 from 10am-12pm. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Luray's life.
