His date of birth in both his World War I Draft Registration and the Social Security Applications and Claims Index is July 6, 1877. I do not know for certain which is correct. Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” Friday, December 4, 1959: Luther Bryan Luther Bryan, 81, of 309 Richmond avenue, died at University hospitals in Iowa City at 8 a.m. Thursday. He was born July 6, 1878. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Valerie Eslinger of Anaconda, Mont., and Mrs. Mildred Young of St. Joseph, Mo.; two sons, Harold of Des Moines and Denton of Lakeview Terrace, Calif.; and 12 grandchildren. His wife, Edith, died March 17, 1932 [sic]. The body is at the Johnson funeral chapel. “Bryan Service,” From “Ottumwa Courier,” Monday, December 7, 1959: Funeral services for Luther A. Bryan, 82, who died Thursday at the State University hospitals in Iowa City, will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Johnson funeral chapel. The Rev. L.C. Card, pastor of the First Church of the Open Bible, will officiate. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery.
