Luther Eldridge Proffit, 89, of Hardy, went to be with his Lord Thursday, April 3, 2008.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a Veteran of the United States Army and retired in 1980 from the Burlington Industries. He was a devoted Christian and a member of Parkway Wesleyan Church for 51 years.
He was born April 19, 1918, the son of the late Geter A. Proffit and Alberta Smith Proffit. He was one of thirteen children.

Proffit, of Hardy; children, Diane Williams and husband, Warren, of North Carolina, Phyllis Clark and husband, Steve, of Tennessee, and Gerald Proffit and wife, Sharon, of Hardy; eight grandchildren, Angela Proffit-Crouch, Karla Williams, Brad Williams, Wesley Clark, Jana ClarkWyatt, Matthew Clark, Jordan Clark and Jamie Clark; seven greatgrandchildren; two brothers, James Proffit and wife, Frances, and Alvin Proffit; four sisters, Dealia Lantz, Margaret Jones, Frances Martin, and Helen Atkins and husband, Richard; and special friends, Norman and Pearl Quarles.
The family would like to thank all of those who gave to them in this time of need. Your prayers, words and many acts of kindness are deeply appreciated. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Springtree Rehabilitation Center and their staff.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Parkway Wesleyan Church with Pastor Mike Lauridsen officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 4, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, N.Y. 10018 or Parkway Wesleyan Missions, 3645 Orange Avenue, N.E., Roanoke, Va. 24012.
