Description	:	Luther Potterfield was for many years the Superintendent of Lovettsville Union Cemetery, and he was described as "the indefatigable superintendent" of the cemetery in "The Loudoun Lutheran" issue of April 1898, in an article on the Decoration Day Services held at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church in that year, of which he was one of the principal organizers. Potterfield was an active member of New Jerusalem, and sang in a quartet there. Prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, Potterfield was a Private in Co. G ("Everhart's Company") of the 56th Virginia Militia. On July 25, 1861, writing from Weverton, Potterfield sought information Maryland Congress Francis Thomas (who helped organize the Potomac Home Brigade) about taking the Lovettsville Company of the 56th Militia, and returning to Loudoun "to protect our homes" from the rebels. Again in March 1862, Potterfield wrote to Secretary of War Stanton offering to raise a regiment of home guard, and saying that he had a recommendation from General Nathaniel Banks, the Union commander across the Potomac in Maryland. In some circles, he is best known for allowing his farm at the foot of the Short Hill to be used by Union soldiers who lured the Confederate renegade John Mobberly into an ambush in April 1865, in which Mobberly was killed on account of his atrocities committed against Union captives and his cruelty toward civilians. This operation was authorized by the U.S. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. In the first post-war election, on June 1, 1865, Potterfield was elected Constable for Lovettsville. No later than 1878, he moved into the town of Lovettsville and bought a house there, in which he lived until selling it in 1924. He also served as the Lovettsville Postmaster from March 21, 1889, to April 10, 1893. --------------- Funeral Notice...provided by Gary Virts Richmond Times Dispatch, January 21, 1926 Purcellville, VA., Jan. 20 - Funeral services were held Thursday for L. H. Potterfield who died in Washington. Mr. Potterfield , who was 88 years old, had been a life-long resident of this county until two years ago, when he went to Washington to live. Mr. Potterfield was a charter member of the Masonic lodge which was established at Lovettsville in 1868. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. James Dunlap, of Blackstone.
