Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at St. John Lutheran Church – Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa. Reverend Lil Johnston will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. LuVerne Henry Helmrichs was born May 29, 1927 on the family farm near Ireton, Iowa, the son of Henry and Tina (Hartman) Helmrichs. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church – Preston Township. He attended country school before attending high school in Le Mars where he graduated from Central High School. While in high school, LuVerne was a standout in track and held records for many years. He was united in marriage to Violet Kallsen on June 12, 1949 at St. John Lutheran Church – Preston Township. LuVerne and Violet farmed on several homesteads in Plymouth County through the years before settling on the family farm near Ireton, Iowa. LuVerne was also a feed dealer for many years for Pete’s Feed in Beemer, NE. After retiring from farming, they continued to make their home on the farm. Violet passed away July 14, 2009. LuVerne stayed on the farm until moving to Le Mars in March of 2017, when he became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars. LuVerne was lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church – Preston Township. In his younger years, LuVerne enjoyed fishing. He and Violet enjoyed going to square dances and playing in card clubs. He and Violet also enjoyed taking many bus trips over the years. Survivors include his son, Dave (Linda) Helmrichs of Urbandale, IA; his daughter: Mary Henry of Council Bluffs, IA; his grandchildren and great grandchildren: Bradly (Pam) Helmrichs of Orange City, IA, and their children, Emory, Brody, and Jaxson; Christopher (Laura) Helmrichs of Le Mars, IA, and their children, Braelyn and Avery; Nicole Martin of Council Bluffs, IA, and her children, Damien, Easton, Cassidy, and Jazlyn; Brittany (Austin) Jacobsen of Sioux Falls, SD; and Michael (Alexis) Henry of Kingsley, IA; his sister in law: Norma Jean Borchers of Le Mars, IA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Tina Helmrichs; his father and mother in law: Jesse and Lorena Kallsen; his sister: Arlene Kallsen; his sisters in law: Evelyn Boetger, Lois Lias, and Phyllis Callahan; and his brothers in law: Charles Swift, Pat Callahan, Ray Boetger, Harvey Lias, Clarence Kallsen, and Wendell Borchers.
