She had been a patient in the hospital since December 26, five days after she became ill with severe bronchitis." "An active worker and leader in many civic and social societies of the city, Mrs. Chandler had been in failing health for several years. Again in 1943 she fell on the church steps and broke her left hip, causing several months hospitalization." "She suffered a severe lung hemorrhage on July 30, 1944 and was confined to her bed for five weeks. She recovered from this illness and again became active in her social clubs. On the afternoon of December 15, she attended the U-Go-I-Go club meeting and in the evening attended the Rebekah Lodge meeting. The last meeting she attended was that of the Past Noble Matrons of the Lodge on December 18." "To City in 1882" Lydia Ann was born February 1, 1859 in Park county, Indiana, the first daughter of I.M. and Eliza Cunningham Darland. When she was two years old, the family came in covered wagon to Iowa, settling in Mahaska County." "The family moved to Minnesota in 1865 and a year later returned to Iowa in Powesheik County. It was on February 15, 1882 that they moved to Audubon." "She married James [Randolph] Chandler on August 25, 1884 at the residence of Dave Soar. [James was the son of Richard J. Chandler, native of New Jersey, and Mary Randolph, native of West Virginia]. Six weeks later they moved to their home on Washington Street where they lived the rest of their lives. One daughter, Jean Harley Chandler, was born January 1, 1888, and died on March 11, 1896. Mr. Chandler passed away on March 27, 1935."[He died from Bronchitis Myocoditis at their home on Washington Street. While in Audubon, Mr. Chandler worked for Captain Charles Stuart, first on Mr. Stuart's ranch near Audubon and then in his Audubon elevator. Her husband was a member of the I.O.O.F. for 54 years, member of the Audubon City Council for 7 years, and city marshal for 1 year. In 1909, he became janitor at the Audubon Schools for 13 years.--info from his obituary]. "Social Organizations" "Mrs. Chandler was the second member of the Presbyterian Church in Audubon, uniting with the church on July 26, 1885, and always took a leading part in the church activities and services." "In addition, she was a charter member of the Rebekah Lodge No.459 and received the Decoration of Chivalry from that Lodge. She was also a member of the Eastern Star Lodge of Exira; The Daughters of the American Revolution; Audubon Columbian Club; a life member of the American's Creed; the Garden Club and the W.R.C. during World War I and until a few weeks preceding her death, she knitted many articles fro the American Red Cross." "The eldest of 11 children, Mrs. Chandler is preceded in death by her husband and three sisters and three brothers." "Survivors" "She is survived by her step-son, Harry Chandler of Paoli, Colo.; two sisters, Mrs. Maude Walters of Audubon and Mrs. Emma Sales of Council Bluffs, and two brothers, C.R. Darland of Audubon and A.C. Darland of Grinnell." "Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in the First Presbyterian church with the Rev. Gordon I. Zimmerman in charge. The Rebekah Lodge members attended in a body and conducted ritual services at the grave. Burial was in the Maple Grove cemetery." According to the book, "History of Audubon, Iowa, Audubon Centennial 1878-1978", Lydia Chandler operated a small nursery & flower business in the 1930's.
