Burial was in the Leon cemetery" The Leon Journal Reporter; Leon , Iowa Thurs March 6, 1941, p 2, col 1 "Lydia Ann Long, daughter of William and Margeret Long, was born in Indiana, August 15 1862[the year is very hard to read but looks more like 1862 than 1864]. She was about three years of age when her parents moved from Indiana to Iowa and located in Wayne County where she grew to womanhood. On September 15, 1880 she was united in marriage to Grant Sires at Derby Iowa. They lived in Derby and vicinity many years, living on a farm for a while, later Mr Sires devoted several years to the barber trade in Derby. To Mr and Mrs Sires eight children were born, two of whom died in infancy. Mr Sires passed away in 1908. The widowed mother bravely and patiently managed to keep her family together and bring them to maturity. One son, Chester, died in 1917, another son Arthur passes away in April 1940. She leaves to mourn her passing, one son Harlan Sires, formerly of Leon, Iowa, now residing at Rolla Missouri; three daughters, Mrs Verna Hawley of Illinois City, Illinois with whom the mother spent her latter years; Mrs L.J. Shipman of St Joseph Mo; and Mrs Loretta Shelton, Des Moines Iowa. There are ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren; also two brothers and one half sister Mrs. W.H. Trower, besides other relatives and many friends. Mrs Sires united with the Methodist church in Derby during her early married life and always maintained a chrisitian attitude toward life, her family and her neighbors. She was a kind and devoted mother and a good citizen doing her part wherever she could help in any way. In accordance with her wishes, her children returned her body to Leon Iowa for burial in the cemetery there. Her funeral was held in the Stewart Funeral home, on March 4, 1941. Rev Clarence Moore, Methodist Minister at Leon, in charge. He spoke briefly using two verses of scripture as a text, namely: "She hath done what she could." Mark. 14:8 . "Her children arise up and call her blessed" Prov 31:28.
