Information from Roger Lambert: The published obituary of Lydia Ann Poston Turner Broxton appears to be correct as to her death and burial and her history after her return to Andrews, SC, in 1978. However, her earlier history is almost completely incorrect. Lydia Ann was not born in Charleston County. She was born in Georgetown County, SC, as was recorded on her birth cerfificate. Because Lydia Ann was born almost twenty-four years before I was, I cannot be certain about the exact spot of her birth. It may have been on her mother's farm in the Lamberttown community. Her mother, Mary Emma Ward Poston Thomas (1896-1965) owned a farm called, unsurprisingly, the Emma Poston farm. It was contiguous to a farm owned by Emma's brother William Benjamin "Ben" Ward (1882-1928) and to another owned by another brother, Maxwell Lucas Ward (1904-1986). Emma was widowed by the death of Lydia Ann's father Andrew Benjamin Poston (1894-1920). Two of the farms, Emma's and Ben's, subsequently were owned by Glennie Leroy Cooper (1909-1988) who operated them as a singe combined farm. In 1920, Andrew, Emma, and their four children, Letha, Lydia Ann, Mattie, and Andrew C., were living on Emma's farm. The house was similar to many farmhouses of its era: a sturdy, unpainted house of about four rooms with a porch across the front and, in the back yard, a kitchen that was connected to the house only by a covered porch. In 1949, Glennie tore down the house, except for the kitchen. The derilect kitchen remained until at least the mid 1950s. I worked on Glennie's farm during the early and mid 1950s. I chopped, hoed, and picked cotton. I plowed corn. Some years, my family planted a large garden on the farm. Once, Glennie, my grandmother, and I (and perhaps one or two other people] took refuge from a thunderstorm in the still-standing kitchen. In his old age, Glennie Cooper sold his farm to Evert Lambert (1911-2011). Evert was a biological son of Emma's brother Ben Ward. Upon Evert's death, ownership of the farm passed to his daughter. Her dwelling, at the end of a dirt road now named Evert Lane, sits very nearly on the former site of Emma's farmhouse. In 1926, the widowed Emma married a widowed farmer, Daniel Timothy Thomas (1884-1944). Daniel's farm was also in Lambertown, only a mile of two from Emma's farm. In the 1930 census, Emma and two of her children, Lydia Ann and Andrew, were living with Daniel Thomas and some of his children. In the 1940 census, Lydia Ann was no longer with Emma and Daniel. Daniel's son Wallie Thomas (1907-1978) was in the household. After Daniel's death, Wallie inherited the house and lived on the site until he died, although eventually he replaced the house. I do not know where Lydia Ann was in 1940, but when Daniel Thomas died in July 1944, Emma and Lydia Ann came to the house where I lived with my parents and my maternal grandparents. My maternal grandmother, Esther Jane Ward Bratcher, and Emma were first cousins. Emma and Lydia Ann remained at our house about two or three nights before they returned to Daniel Thomas's house; and I believe even then they returned only because my uncle Daniel Alexander Bratcher, then nineteen years old, agreed to stay with them a few nights until the women had enough courage for just the two of them to remain there at night. Wallie Thomas seems not to have been at home during that time. Emma's obituary says she lived in Lamberttown until about five years before her death in 1965. My memory is different: I believe both Emma and Lydia Ann left Lamberttown not long after Daniel Thomas's death. Emma is said to have been a member of Saints Delight Pentecostal Holiness Church, which probably she was when she lived in Lamberttown. I attended that church until I left home in September 1957, and I do not recall seeing Emma in attendance at any time in the 1950s. I knew all of the families in Lamberttown and was kin to most of them. Three of her sisters lived in Lambertown then, and she was not with any of them. Nor do I remember her with any other family. Sometime, probably after Emma was widowed the second time, Lydia Ann moved to Charleston as did several of her cousins, particularly daughters of Emma's brother Ben Ward. Lydia Ann married a Turner whose first name I never knew. She was Mrs. Lydia Ann Turner, Charleston, in Emma's obituary in 1965. I saw Lydia Ann in North Charleston in 1968, but I did not ask where she was then residing or what her married name then was. Ben Ward's oldest daughter, Aline Ward (c. 1915 - 1978), had been married to Glennie Leroy Cooper who was mentioned above. In the mid 1940s Glennie and Aline lived in a store in Lamberttown. Sometime in the late 1940s, Aline left Glennie and moved to Charleston. During most of 1949, I lived with my family in the dwelling quarters at the rear of the store. Aline married George Gordon Broxton (1908-1988). After Lydia Ann's marriage to Turner ended, she, in turn, married Broxton ( "took him away from Aline", in words of family members ). After Aline's divorce from Broxton, and after a nearly thirty-year stay in Charleston, Aline returned to Lamberttown and to Glennie who, in her absence, had been married and widowed. After Glennie's death, my mother bought from its inheritor, one of Glennie's step grandsons, the store that had belonged to Glennie and Aline. Mom had the store torn down, and had another built in its place. The newer store now sits unused. Lydia Ann's published obituary says she moved from Charleston to Andrews in 1978. That time sounds about right, and the obituary seems correct after that year. She did not return to Lamberttown. Her attendance at Black River Baptist Church suggests that she moved north of Black River to the Piney Forest, or Big Dam Swamp, community where probably she lived near her brother, the Rev. Andrew Curven Poston. My note about Lydia Ann turned into an epistle. So be it.
