Description	:	Lydia T. Wight Lydia Ann Thomas, daughter of Orlin S. and Mary Moffet Thomas, was born at Pleasanton, Iowa, March 19, 1888. When she was three years old the family moved to Van Wert, lowa, her father having accepted appointment as a missionary for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Wight Lydia Ann Thomas, daughter of Orlin S. and Mary Moffet Thomas, was born at Pleasanton, Iowa, March 19, 1888. When she was three years old the family moved to Van Wert, lowa, her father having accepted appointment as a missionary for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The rearing of the family of three children thus became the sole responsibility of the mother. At the age of eight, Lydia was baptized a member of the church with which the family was identified, and throughout a long life, she faithfully kept the covenant which she had made with her God. When Lydia was 13 the mother moved her little family to Lamoni for the sake of the better educational and religious advantages which she believed to be here. Lydia was graduated from the Lamoni high school in 1905, having completed the four-year course in three years with extra credits in languages. She attended Graceland college, Iowa State Teachers college at Cedar Falls, and the State University of Iowa. Lacking one semester of study for the bachelor of arts degree, she left the university to fill an urgent need for a teacher of English in the Lamoni high school. She continued to teach for several years sacrificing her cherished ambition to return to the university for further study. She was more than teacher-she was guide and counselor. One of her former pupils said recently, "'There are teachers you merely remember. She directed the course of my life." Her teaching and writing abilities had also been given freely for her church until almost the last week of her life. On June 14, 1914, Lydia was married to Leslie S. Wight and for almost a half century supported her husband in both his business and ministerial life. To them two sons were born, Gordon Stewart of Lima, Peru, and John Grayson of Memphis, Tenn. She passed away on May 2, 1962 at Passavant hospital, Chicago, Ill., as a result of a serious heart condition which had been developing for some time. She leaves her companion, two sons and their companions, six grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, a brother, James A. Thomas, and a sister, Mrs. Morris E. Mortimore, both of Lamoni, many other relatives and a host of friends for whom her energies and abilities had always been given freely. Services were held on Friday, May 4, at Chicago, with Elder A. Orlin Crownover officiating and at Lamoni, May 5, with Bishops G. L. DeLapp and Leslie W. Kohlman officiating. Casketbearers were men of Lamoni, who had been her students in the Lamoni high school.
