Lydia Roesler was born at Tripp County, South Dakota, on June 21, 1911, to Fredrick and Rosina Roesler. As a young child, Lydia homesteaded with her family north of Burt. She was raised on the family homestead and educated in rural area schools. A hard worker all of her life, at the age of 14, Lydia began working in a hotel and restaurant in Richardton. On November 16, 1935, Lydia was united in marriage to longtime neighbor Herbert Boknecht. Togehter, they owned and operated Burt's general store, they supplied the town with everything from bulk gas, to groceries, to hardware. It was while working here that Lydia was given the duties of postmaster, a position that she held for 29 years. Upon Herbert's death in 1975, Lydia retired and moved to Williston to be closer to her daughter. While living in Williston, she worked at the A&A Market, until the store closed in the early 1980's. Lydia was an accomplished artist, she enjoyed painting as well as sewing and cooking. She also loved to play bingo and attended rummage sales. She played cards with her family; however, she often would get a disgusted look on her face and fold them, she usually couldn't wait to get out of playing, and go make lunch. Surviving Lydia are her two sons, David Boknecht Lewiston, Idaho, and Bill Boknecht, Minot; a son-in-law, LeRoy Anseth; six grandchildren, and 19 grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter, Rita Lou, four sisters and four brothers.
