Lydia Guthmiller was born at home, north of Taylor, on April 15, 1919, the sixth of fourteen children to Christ and Elizabeth (Permann) Guthmiller. She grew up on the family farm one mile north of the Dunn County line, attending Ridgeway #4 Country School through the eighth grade. After elementary school, Lydia worked at home for two years before entering high school and graduating from Taylor High School on May 25, 1939. Lydia was united in marriage to Bennie Strom on the Strom farm, one mile south of Taylor, on June 8, 1939. She attended Medora Bible Camp in June 1938. She had made the most important decision of her life when she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. That decision affected and guided her throughout her lifetime. She praises Him for his constant love and care. Lydia and Bennie loved to farm, travel, and visit family and friends. In June of 1985, they moved into Dickinson. Bennie entered St. Benedict’s Home in February of 1991, where he lived until his death in 1992. Lydia took care of her brother-in-law Harry for over 56 years, and she continued to care for him for two years after Bennie passed away. Harry and Bennie farmed together through their lifetime. Lydia continued to live in her home. She had much compassion for the young and especially for the elderly, always putting others interests before her own. Lydia was a member of Immanuel Church of Taylor, serving on the Women’s Guild. She was a superintendent of Cradle Roll for 40 yrs., and as a Sunday School Teacher for 15 years. She was a charter member of Taylor Senior Citizen’s, Elks #1137 of Dickinson, and was a Retired Services Volunteer at St. Benedict’s, St. Luke’s, Lincoln School and various other places. She helped organize women’s retreats, sang in the church choir, and she especially loved helping people in need – young and old. In her pastime she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading, fishing, gardening, Bible studies, flowers, sewing (making all her own clothes as well as clothes for others), and spending time babysitting and caring for family members. She loved them all dearly. She is preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and Christ Guthmiller; husband Bennie Strom; brothers, Christ, Philip, Jacob and Henry Guthmiller; sisters, Eva Hartinger, Magdaline Engel, Pauline Flinn, Bertha Krank, Rose Myran and Kathryn Conradson; brothers-in-law, Shane Conradson, Larry Schmidt, Albert L. Myran, Shane Hanks, Adam Hartinger, Emil Engel, Gordon Flinn, and Leo Krank; sister-in-law, Candy Guthmiller; nephews; Duane Schmidt and Leon Conradson; nieces; Kathy Cunningham, Karen Gramlow, Darlys Doppler and Kathy Hanks; great nephews, Michael Doppler and Paul A. Myran. In lieu of flowers, she prefers memorials be made to Immanuel Church of Taylor.
