Later, she had a marriage that survived the Depression years and she and her husband Andrew raised eight children. It brought out many talents in Lydia, but she is remembered most for her cooking. Lydia loved to cook, bake and can their meats and vegetables. Every fall she helped butcher two hogs to provide meat for the family during the winter. Chickens had to be butchered and that was an on-going thing. According to her children, Lydia's fried chicken was absolutely wonderful. She was always in the kitchen when there was company, preparing meals for everyone. She also worked at numerous restaurants in the area. She was the mastermind who made the salads at Bernie's Steakhouse where she also worked. "Mom made the best lettuce salad," said her daughter Shirley. "It was one of our favorites when we were growing up. She also baked bread once a week and it was so good to have when we came home from school." Lydia's talents, in addition to cooking and raising children, chickens, ducks, geese, milk cows, ranch cows, horses, pigs, goats and turkeys ("You name it, they probably had it," her children recall) included doing embroidery. "Mom just generally enjoyed working," they added. They stayed on the farm until Andrew died on July 3,1986. In September of 1986, Lydia moved into Mound City and in 2002 she moved into the Herreid Good Samaritan Assisted Living Center. Despite a series of mini-strokes, her mind remained sharp and she knew her children when they came to visit. Lydia died Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at the hospital in Linton, N.D., at the age of 97. She was born Oct. 5, 1910, on the family farm east of Mound City to Wilhelm and Rosina (Kary) Heinrich. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school until the eighth grade. On Oct. 13, 1929, she married Andrew H. Huber in a double wedding with Andrew's sister, Dorothy, and Fred Biel at the Spring Creek Baptist Church. They made their home 10 miles east of Herreid, where they raised their family. Survivors are three daughters, Lorraine (Ray) Neumiller of Rapid City, Shirley (Ted) Moser of Mound City and Dianna (Tom Schmidt) Scherr of Park Falls, Wis.; three sons, LaVern "Whitey" Huber of Mound City, Wayne (Mary) Huber of Holland, Minn., and Bernie (Gloria) Huber of Mound City; 27 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren; and one sister, Emma Naasz of Spokane, Wash. In addition to her husband, Lydia was preceded in death by a son Mervin "Bud" on June 4, 1977, a daughter Stella on Nov. 17, 2006, grandson Craig Moser on June 11, 2005, six brothers, John, Rueben, Alfred, George, William and Albert, and two sisters, Frieda Sitter and Viola Boschee. Funeral services for Lydia were Monday, July 14, at the First Baptist Church in Eureka. Casketbearers were grandsons, Danny Huber, Kevin Moser, Steve Neumiller, Glen Scherr, Nathan Goehring, Blake Huber, Randy Rohrback and Matt Durband. Honorary bearers were the grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and the staff of the Herreid Good Samaritan Center. Burial was in the Eureka City Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Mobridge Tribune July 16, 2008
