Description	:	Daughter of William Hubbard. Wife of Thomas Lathrop. Her parents, first cousins Capt William Hubbard and Lydia Coit, were married in 1764. Read More	Daughter of William Hubbard. Wife of Thomas Lathrop. Her parents, first cousins Capt William Hubbard and Lydia Coit, were married in 1764. Her mother Lydia was a daughter of Lydia Lathrop and Capt Joseph Coit. By 1773 her father was established in business in Norwich in the firm of Hubbards & Greene. Their store was in the part of Norwich then known as Chelsea or The Landing. In the early years of his residence in Norwich, Capt Hubbard occupied the Benedict Arnold house, but by 1776, he had moved to the Hezekiah Huntington house, where he advertised in February that year to sell a variety of goods, including window glass, coffee, sugar, brandy, etc. In November 1778 Lydia's mother, Lydia, died of consumption, after being in a decline for 5 1/2 months. William Hubbard married (2) Joanna Perkins, daughter of Joanna Mascarene and James Perkins of Boston, Massachusetts, about 1779. In 1784 the firm of Hubbards and Greene dissolved partnership, and William Hubbard soon moved to Boston. His wife Joanna died in 1788, and in 1789 their eldest son William and another son aged 9, the child of his second wife died. In 1790 his daughter Lydia, wife of Thomas Lathrop, died, as did another son, Joseph, 20. "The marble slab inserted in the tomb-stone of the Hubbard family in the Norwich Town burying-ground, having been within the last year removed, and destroyed, as we will give the inscription entire: "'Tomb of Lydia Hubbard, daughter of Joseph & Lydia Coit, & wife of William Hubbard, who died Nov. 2, 1778, aged 37 years, also the remains of four children of William & Lydia Hubbard, Lydia Lathrop, wife of Thomas Lathrop, who died Dec. 26, 1790, aged 25, William who died Sept. 10, 1789, aged 22, Joseph who died May 25, 1790, aged 20, Lucretia who died Oct. 14, 1775, aged 5. "'Each humane virtue their mild eyes esprest, And a young heaven was opened in their breast; In the last hour their triumph shone complete, And death disarm'd sat smiling at their feet. And now, thous faithful stone, proclaim aloud, A Christian is the noblest work of God.'" William Hubbard died in Colchester, Connecticut, in 1801. "During his residence in Norwich, he was most active in all benevolent enterprises, and gave largely to public improvements, notably the widening and beautifying of Crescent Street, and the old cross highway."
