Lyla was born in Newport, WA. Hospital on April 26,1931; passing in the same Hospital 90 years later with her children and brother Wes at her side. Lyla spent her life working to inspire, teach, and strengthen the children and families of Pend Oreille County through 4-H, Cusick School District PTA, Church, Calispel Grange, and other community organizations. As a nine year 4-H member in her youth, she found her life's calling. She founded Lucky 4-H club which was active with her leadership for 65 years. She spearheaded many county wide 4-H camps and other events. Lyla received many awards at club, county and state levels. This included a National 4-H Congress Award and was inducted into the Washington state 4-H Hall of Fame. Working with children of all ages was her greatest award. She was dedicated to the Pend Oreille County Fair. She served as long term 4-H building superintendent, fair secretary for two years, and various 4-H and fair wide committees and capacities. She served the fair well from the early 1950 to 2017. Lyla was also interim County Extension Agent in the 1970's with her dear friend Martha Driver. Lyla worked as Title 1 Reading Aid at Cusick School District for 20 years. Many remember her loving support and playground supervision skills-stand against the wall technique. She was respected and loved. Mom enjoyed Northwood's Preforming Arts shows, Garden Club, Usk Community Hall functions and helping neighbors in need. Lyla and Charlie married in Newport WA on June 10, 1950. Their 63 years together was centered around building the farm, raising children, and strengthening community. Mother to the three of us was Mom's main focus, meeting our needs and interests. Our home welcomed friends, family, and those in need Someone once called it "Grand Central Station". Many remember playing in the barns, tree forts, just hanging around, hay and sleigh rides, 4-H meetings where sewing, cooking, canning, leather crafting and working with farm animals taught lifelong lessons. Farm life was challenging and rewarding. Mom and Dad began to build this part of the farm and home in 1949. It has had many challenging and rewarding updates and remodels but through it all mom and dad had a knack of seeing and carrying out the vision. Those who have lived the farm life understand the many challenges and rewards. Mom was the instigator of many adventures, talking dad into taking a break from the farm work and going on local excursions as well as travels to Canada and many of the United States. A unique family trip was during the Cuban Missile Crises to pick up a bus for Cusick School District in Atlanta Georgia. A whole family vacation to Hawaii was indeed a special memory for all. When our Grandparents were in their 80's mom and dad took them on one last camping trip to Alaska, another challenge but cherished by all. When Lyla and Charlie retired, they traveled to the southwest and beyond in their much-loved RV's. They finally landed in Quartzsite Arizona, buying a small home on an acre to remodel as their snowbird home. Family treasures the memories of the remodel, learning Arizona history, 4- wheeling and being with special friends. The Weston Family, friends from P.O. County, Arizona neighbors and family. Lyla always cherished the Bailey farm and her family, watching time move from pioneer life to modern conveniences. We often would go home to the Bailey farm. She felt at peace just looking at the hill above the house and gazing at the garden and fields. Mom especially enjoyed planning and going to family reunions, keeping those important connections. Other adventures include picnics with dad in the woods as he logged. Picnics with our family and neighbors. Family Christmas was always over the top. Summer meant the search for the secret Huckleberry patch and canning the winter food supply. She loved her garden and green house that supplied many people as well as wildlife. The past few years she loved looking over her yard and farm, counting the deer and worrying about her many kids as she worked on rehabilitation from a stroke of almost four years ago. She is preceded in death by her parents Paul and Irene Bailey, husband Charles Hoisington and sister Mildred Brewer, brother Gene Bailey and recently daughter-in-law Rachel Hoisington and sister-in-law Ardella Bailey. She is survived by daughter Gail (Bob) Mitchell, Nancy Hoisington, son David Hoisington, sister Edith Brewer, brother Wes Bailey, and seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held at Sherman Campbell Funeral Home in Newport, WA from 12- 5pm on Thursday, July 29, 2021. Graveside services will be held at the Newport Cemetery, Saturday, July 31, 2021, at 11:am followed by a potluck lunch at the Usk Community Hall at 1:pm Sherman-Campbell Funeral & Cremation Services in Newport is in charge of arrangements.
