Description	:	Lylas Lavon Ruhlen Gugler 83 died Tuesday, June 15, 2009, in Abilene. She was September 10, 1925 in Greenleaf. She was the daughter of the Rev. Charles and Edith Stafford Ruhlen, the fourth of five children. Lylas attended eight grade schools and three high schools before graduating from Clearwater High with the class of 1943. She earned a bachelor's degree in music from the University of Kansas Schoolof fine arts, trained as classical pianist and had a lovely soprano voice. She was September 10, 1925 in Greenleaf. She was the daughter of the Rev. Charles and Edith Stafford Ruhlen, the fourth of five children. Lylas attended eight grade schools and three high schools before graduating from Clearwater High with the class of 1943. She earned a bachelor's degree in music from the University of Kansas Schoolof fine arts, trained as classical pianist and had a lovely soprano voice. She married Wayne Herbert Gugler in Watkins Hall on the KU campus on Fev 7, 1946. She gave private piano and voice lessons in her home thoughout her teaching career, which started in perry. After moving to Abilene, she taught music at Industry and with the Abilene school district, retiring in 1975. She conducted the chancel chior of the First United Methodist Church for 15 years. An aviod reader, Lylas was a longtime memver of Ladied Literay League and served on the board of directors for the Abilene Public Libary. She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi and belonged to several bridge clubs. She loved to entertain and was an exvellent cook. Survivors included her sisters, Ruth Butterfeild of Clay Center, and Carole Gray of Overland Park; her brother, Ralph Ruhlen of Baldwin; son, Douglas Wayne and wife Roz and grandchildren Phillip, Benjamin, and Karen; Loren Dwight and wife Anna and grandchildren Elizabeth and Rachel; daughter , Lynn Gugler Whitten, husband Ron and Grandchildren Katie ( Mitchell ) Harbour, Julie Boggs, Jennifer Whitten, Sarah Whitten and Beth ( Nate ) Govea. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, neices and nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one brother, Stafford Ruhlen Education was very important of Lylas and she requested her body be donated to the Universtity of Kansas Medical Center for scientific research. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday June 19, at the Frist United Methodist Church in Abilene. The Rev. Jim Edwards will offciate with Danner Funeral Home handlinf the arrangements. The family suggests memorials to the Abilene Public Library in care of Danner Funeral Home P.O. Box 758, Abilene Ks 67410.
