Burial will follow in Lutheran Cemetery, where Military Honors will be conducted by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. He was born November 1, 1928, in Bruce South Dakota, to the late Benhardt John Fredrick and Elsie Matilda (Tanke) Schmidt. He is survived by the love of his life, his spouse of 53 years, Viola (Wiegand) Schmidt; son, Douglas (Missy) Schmidt; daughter, Paula (Scott) Holler; grandchildren, Heather Schmidt, Jacob Schmidt, Nathaniel Schmidt, and Rebekah Holler; step-grandchildren, Sydney Davis, Brandon Davis, and Brandon Blankenship. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Harold, Norman, and Willard Schmidt. Lyle was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Lyle loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and this love shaped the kind, sweet man who always loved and put others before himself. In addition to a kind and compassionate servant's heart, God gifted Lyle with a bright, inquisitive mind. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from South Dakota State University. Upon graduation, he received an ROTC Air Force commission as a 1st Lieutenant and he served his country honorably during the Korean War. After the war, Lyle started a career as a civilian aeronautical engineer with the Air Force. He and Viola later moved to Heath, OH when Lyle came to work at the newly formed Newark Air Force Base in the metrology department. While Lyle enjoyed his career, he even more enjoyed serving his church and spending time with his family. He was a member of Gideon's International and often helped pass out Bibles to schoolchildren in our community. Upon retirement, Lyle and Viola spent 17 wonderful winters living in North Port, FL. As much as he enjoyed the good weather, he always enjoyed coming home to Ohio to spend time with his children and grandchildren. His love, encouragement, and gentle sprit will be missed by many. The family wishes to thank the following people for the love and the care they gave Lyle in his final days: Teresa Reddert, Pastor Tom Olson, Dr. Petryk, Interim Healthcare, Heritage Hall Adult Day Center, Hospice of Central Ohio, Licking Memorial Hospital, and Kindred Transitional Services.
