He attended country school and graduated from Marion High School. He served in the South Dakota Air Guard and the Air Force. He married Fern Schoppert on Dec. 31, 1944. They had four children. He was a diesel mechanic for International Harvestor Company for 40 years. After retirement he worked part-time at the Edgebrook Golf Course in Brookings until 2010. He was an active member of the American Legion Post No. 74, the Brookings 40&8 Voiture 530, and his church. He also donated his time to the domestic violence shelter in Brookings. He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Paulette Anderson of Farmington, Minn., Maurene (Boyd) Heckel of Huron, Sally (Terry) Long of Lewistown, Mont., and Monica (Craig) Jones of Huron; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Dwight (Norma) Waltner of Marion, and Walt (Leslie) Waltner of San Jose, Calif.
