Condolences may be left at goettschonline .com Lyle "Squirt" Russell of Anamosa died Friday, Jan. 23,2004, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Surviving is his wife, Marie, a sister, Gerry Russell, Anamosa, a step-son David (Diana Conwell) Dirks of Anamosa; nine grandchildren, Robin and Curt Pudil, Amber Thomas, Jamey, Sam, Chanin, Sara, Alex and Katie Dirks. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Phyllis, two brothers, Verlon and Alfred and a stepson Leon Dirks. Lyle Russell was born Jan. 13, 1924 at Olin, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Idel Clymer Russell. Squirt graduated with the Class of 1943 from the Anamosa Community Schools. He then went on to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War. He helped his dad with his ice delivery business and later worked at the Conoco Service station. In 1954, Squirt started working for the Iowa Department of Transportation. Lyle Russell and Marie Zimmerman Dirks were married Oct. 2, 1976 at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. He retired from the D.O.T. in 1986. Squirt was a member of the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church where he was confirmed in 1956. Squirt was very patriotic. He had been the commander of the Anamosa Veterans Military Honors team until the past few years. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was also the commander of VFW Post 4077 in 1984. He liked to bowl and he loved the CUBS. In his younger day, Squirt boxed in the Golden Gloves competition.
