Description	:	Martha Van Roekel, 86, of the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, Minnesota, formerly of Valley Springs, South Dakota, died Friday, December 17, at the nursing home. Services were Tuesday, December 21, at the Reformed Church of Valley Springs in Valley Springs with the Rev. Fred Wilgenburg officiating. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. Read More	Martha Van Roekel, 86, of the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, Minnesota, formerly of Valley Springs, South Dakota, died Friday, December 17, at the nursing home. Services were Tuesday, December 21, at the Reformed Church of Valley Springs in Valley Springs with the Rev. Fred Wilgenburg officiating. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. Mrs. Van Roekel was born May 22, 1913, at Sioux Center to Jacob and Grace (Van Roekel) Van Wyk. Her parents died when she was a young girl, and she spent the remainder of her childhood with family members. She married Abe Van Roekel on June 25, 1932, at Sioux Center. The couple farmed near Sioux Center until moving near Beaver Creek, Minnesota, in 1942. They retired from farming in 1968 and moved to Valley Springs. He died May 6, 1970. She continued to live in Valley Springs. In 1987, she became the first resident of the Heritage House in Luverne, Minnesota. She later moved to the Tuff Memorial Home on February 4, 1988. She was a member of the Reformed Church of Valley Springs and had been active in Circle. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting, traveling and reading, but most of all she enjoyed her family and friends. Survivors include her sons, Robert and Jennie of Sioux Falls, Donald and Verlys of Surprise, Arizona, and Roger and Mary of Beaver Creek,; a daughter, Viola and Mike Uithoven of Luverne; 13 grandchildren; 23 greatgrandchildren; two great-greatgrandchildren; sisters Hendrene Schut of Warsaw, Indiana, and Gertrude Vander Esch of Hawarden; brothers-in-law John and Martha Van Roekel of Sioux Center and Ben Kraayenbrink of Sioux Center; sisters-in-law Alice Van Wyk of Hawarden, Jean Mieras of Boyden, Irene Van Roekel of Sioux Center and Alice De Goei of Orange City; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Dick; and a great-grandchild. Sioux Center News 1999-12-29.
