Saturday, January 24, 2009, in her residence. Mabel was born on September 20, 1915, in Rochester, Indiana, the daughter of Harley and Tessie (McCarter) Barkman. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1934 and the Indiana College of Beauty Culture at Indianapolis, Indiana, in June 1938. Saturday, January 24, 2009, in her residence. Mabel was born on September 20, 1915, in Rochester, Indiana, the daughter of Harley and Tessie (McCarter) Barkman. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1934 and the Indiana College of Beauty Culture at Indianapolis, Indiana, in June 1938. She was employed at a beauty shop in Tipton, Indiana, until her marriage to Kline Blacketor Jr. of Santa Monica, California, on January 29, 1939, in Rochester, Indiana. They lived in Santa Monica for several years and returned to Rochester in the early 1940s. Mabel and Kline had one child, Brent Blacketor, who was killed in a tragic accident after his freshman year of college. After his death, Mabel was inspired to give considerable improvements to the Rochester community as a memorial to Brent. These gifts included a donation of 25 acres of land for the establishment of the Brent Blacketor Memorial Sports Complex. She also gifted land to the City of Rochester for the expansion of the Mill Creek Golf Course for which the entrance was named Brent Blacketor Drive. Mabel was deputy auditor for Robert Peterson for four years. She later worked in the business offices of Dr. Howard Rowe and Woodlawn Hospital. She was also the secretary and office manager for 31 years at Peterson, later Peterson and Morton, Law Office, and retired from the Peterson and Waggoner Law Firm. Mabel was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church, Rochester, Indiana. She had been a 4-H leader and supported the 4-H livestock auction for many years. She was active in the Eastern Star and was an advisor to the Rainbow Girls. She contributed to and was a motivator for establishing the Pathway's Project. She was a member of the Woodlawn Hospital Board of Trustees for 12 years. Mabel was one of the original board members of the Fulton Community Foundation where she served for eight years. In 1999 Mabel received the Community Service Award from the Rochester and Lake Manitou Chamber of Commerce. That summer she served as the Marshall of the Round Barn Festival Parade. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Kline, son, Brent, sisters, Zula G. Long and Helen Wilson, and a brother, Earl Barkman. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
