Benson was born to Walter H. and Nettie (Fletcher) Benson on September 28, 1903 at rural Hurley, SD and spent her early life there. Elster, 103, formerly of Crooks, SD passed away Tuesday December 12, 2006 at Bethany Lutheran Nursing Home. Mabel E. Benson was born to Walter H. and Nettie (Fletcher) Benson on September 28, 1903 at rural Hurley, SD and spent her early life there. She was a graduate of Hurley High School and later the Schuyler School of Cosmetology, Sioux Falls, SD. Mabel was united in marriage with J. Nordahl Elster on March 14, 1944 in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple made their home in Canistota, SD where Mabel owned and operated Mabel's Beauty Salon since 1938 in the Ortman Hotel. Previous to this time, she had worked one year in a Beauty Shop in Lennox, SD, and three years in Sioux Falls, at Schuyler's School of Cosmetology as an instructor and operator. The couple then moved to a farm near Harrisburg, SD living there three years. They then purchased a farm near Crooks, SD and made their home there until her husband's death on February 28, 1978. She then moved to Sioux Falls, SD in May of 1979 where she has since resided. Mabel was a member of West Nidaros ELCA rural Crooks and the West Nidaros Women of ELCA. She was also a member of the New Ruth Circle. Survivors include two nieces, Dorothy (Warren) Williamson, Brookings, SD, Twila (Earl) Ruden, Groton, SD; three nephews, Carl (Del) Sanborn, Ipswich, SD, Ross (Shirley) Benson, Hurley, SD Gerald (JoAnn) Sanborn, Leola, SD; special friends, Glen (Irene) Peterson and Orlando (Mary) Fossum. Services will be 3:00 PM Thursday, December 14, 2006 at George Boom Funeral Home with interment at Hills of Rest Memorial Park.
