Mrs. Olson died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006, at Alpine Village in Verdigre. --- Mabel Helen (Jones) Anderson Olson, daughter of Elmer and Nettie (Myles) Jones, was born Oct. 6, 1913, at Verdel. She grew up on the family farm, attending elementary through grade 10 in the Verdel area, and then finished her education, graduating from Plainview High School in May of 1932. Following graduation, she returned to Verdel and taught school for two years before her marriage to Chris I. Anderson on March 17, 1934. They farmed in the Verdel area for several years before purchasing the Anderson Oil Co. in Niobrara, distributing gas and oil to farmers in the rural area as well as operating Anderson's Service Station on the west edge of Niobrara for many years. Health forced their retirement in 1964, when they moved to Chandler, Ariz., returning to Nebraska for summer visits. Since they did not have children, Mabel was a very special aunt to the many nieces and nephews and played a big part in all their lives. Nephew Sean (Rick) Wheeler made his home with them for several years following his mother's death at a very young age. Chris passed away in Arizona in 1982, and she later married Ernest Olson in 1984 in Chandler, and they continued to live there until the death of Ernest in 1993. She then moved to Lynch to be close to her sister, Verna Hopkins, and in 1994, she moved to Alpine Village in Verdigre, where she lived until her death on Nov. 30, 2006. Mabel was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Niobrara since 1959. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, receiving her 50-year membership in 2000. Mabel was a talented seamstress and loved crocheting, knitting, candlewicking and making quilts, and she loved to dance, until her health confined her to nursing care. Mabel is survived by three sisters-in-laws, Clara Banks of Grand Island, Violet Anderson of Iowa and Ruth Anderson of Omaha and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chris, and husband, Ernest; sisters, Ina DeKay, Zelma Schultz, Alice Peed and Verna Hopkins; and a brother, John Jones.
