Mabel grew up on a farm in Clarke County, Iowa and attended country schools in Clarke County and graduated from Osceola High School in 1935. She received her Normal Training Certificate and began teaching in Clarke County country school where she taught for 4 terms. Mabel was united in marriage to Richard Wesley Sloan on May 5, 1940 at the Christian Church Parsonage in Winterset, Iowa and four children blessed this union; Mary, JoAnn, Barbara and Donna. They lived in Murray until 1941 when they moved to Osceola. In 1942 they moved to Des Moines and returned to Osceola in 1948. Mabel worked for Snowdons, Inc., as a seamstress and an inspector. She retired in 1980 after 32 years. Mabel was baptized in the Murray Church of Christ at age 11; she later transferred her membership to the Osceola First Christian Church. She was very active in her church, serving on many boards and singing in the choir. Mabel was like "Mom" to her nieces and nephews since their parents are gone, everyone called her for family history. Those relatives who preceded Mabel in death were her parents, Clarence and Eva Wolfe; husband, Richard Sloan; daughter, Barbara Sloan; son-in-law, Lou Schwartz, granddaughter, Linda Klein, sister, Marie Craig; brothers, Leo Wolfe and Donald Wolfe, and sister-in-law, Mary Funkhouser and brother-in-law, Bart Funkhouser. Mabel leaves to cherish her memory; daughter, Mary Schwartz of Kansas City, MO, daughter, Jo Ann (Larry) Strubhar of Marion, IA, daughter, Donna Sloan of Osceola, IA, grandchildren; Brian (Josie) West, Jeffrey Schwartz, Darla Schwartz, Ellie Schwartz, Sue Schwartz, Jeff Swartz, Cindy Schwartz; great grandchildren, Brandina, Brittany, Patricia and Dominique, sister-in-law, Verda Wolfe of Osceola, as well as other relatives and many friends.
