Read More	Research and transcription by CJenealogy: Cedar Rapids Gazette Tuesday November 26, 1946 LISBON -- A badly burned body, thought to be that of Mrs. Carl Schlemmer, 38, of Lisbon, was found in the smouldering embers of a fire that levelled a small building at the Schlemmer home here at 8:30 a.m. Mayor Walter Challis said Tuesday. Dr. T. Frank Hersch, Linn county coroner, investigated and determined that the body was that of a woman but said he had "no definite identification" as yet. He also said he had not yet decided whether the death was accidental. Hersch said Mr. Schlemmer was at work at the Iowa Manufacturing plant in Cedar Rapids and that the couple's four children were in school at the time of the fire. The house was locked when the coroner arrived and entrance was gained forcibly. Hersch said a paper and pencil were laid out on a table but that there was no writing on the paper. "Mrs. Schlemmer's coat was found hanging on a post 50 feet from the fire and here shoes were nearby," Hersch said. On report of the fire, Mayor Challis sent a man to investigate. He was told the building, about five feet by five feet, was used by the Schlemmers to store meat but that he thought it was used to store cobs. The Schlemmer home is located in the northeast section of Lisbon. The shack was about 100 feet from the house and near the North Western railroad tracks. Wednesday November 27, 1946 Cedar Rapids Gazette LISBON--Deputy Sheriff Larry Condon Wednesday continued investigation of the death of a woman, believed to have been Mrs. Carl Schlemmer, whose badly-burned body was found in the ashes of a building at the Schlemmer home here Tuesday. Dr. T. Frank Hersch, Linn county coroner, withheld official identification of the body and a verdict on whether the death was suicide pending the outcome of Condon's investigation. Mrs. Schlemmer was believed to have died in the fire which destroyed a woodshed at the Schlemmer home in the northeast section of town at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday after her husband had gone to work in a Cedar Rapids plant and her four sons had left for school. Tuesday was Mrs. Schlemmer's thirty-eighth birthday. Condon said he found Mrs. Schlemmer's coat, smelling of kerosene, hanging on a post near the shed. Her shoes were found on the ground near the coat. In the ashes of the fire, Condon found keys to a padlock which barred the back door of the house, and to Mrs. Schlemmer's dresser. He also found a tin can that had been kept in the house and used to pour kerosene to help start a fire in the kitchen range. In the house, a paper and pencil were laid out of a table. There was no writing on the table, however. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the Methodist church. Burial will be in Marion cemetery.
