Description	:	Mabel von Glan Hamer Mabel von Glan Hamer was born on a farm near Breda, Iowa on October 25, 1917, the twin daughter of Gottlieb and Augusta von Glan. She received her early education in a rural school and graduated in 1935 from the high school in Wall Lake, Iowa. She continued her studies during summer sessions at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, while also teaching in a rural school. Read More	Mabel von Glan Hamer Mabel von Glan Hamer was born on a farm near Breda, Iowa on October 25, 1917, the twin daughter of Gottlieb and Augusta von Glan. She received her early education in a rural school and graduated in 1935 from the high school in Wall Lake, Iowa. She continued her studies during summer sessions at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, while also teaching in a rural school. In 1939, she received a two-year Normal degree and then taught on the elementary level at Panora and Kingsley, both in Iowa. In 1941, she married Carl Bickley Hamer of Waterloo. She moved often as she followed him in his United States Service career. While he was teaching at the Sioux Falls Army Air Force Base, she took employment there as a clerk-typist. Carl then enlisted in the Navy and continued further work at Navy Pier in Chicago. Moving on to Chicago with him, she was reinstated as a clerk-typist for the Army Ordnance Department. After Carl was discharged from the Service, they took residence in Waterloo. When their children reached school age, Mabel completed her B.A. degree at the State College of Iowa, now UNI. She taught in the Waterloo School system for 21 years. 14 years into retirement, she and her husband moved into the Friendship Village Retirement Center. He passed away there on July 28, 2001, after a long illness. Survivors include: two daughters, Pamela (Jerry) Monroe and Melanie (Jack) Plett, both of San Diego, Calif.; a son, Mark (JoAnn) of Freeport, Ill.; three grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Ben von Glan of Westside; and her twin sister, Marie Fay, of Rock Island, Ill. Preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; two sisters, Ruth Price and Helen Hundling; and two brothers, Julius and Edward von Glan.
