Mabel was born on May 2, 1900 near Palmer, Kansas to John and Ellen Schwartz. She was the eldest of four children. Read More	MABEL LOLA (SCHWARTZ) VOGEL Mabel Lola (Schwartz) Vogel of Holyoke passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2000 at Melissa Memorial Hospital at the age of 100. Mabel was born on May 2, 1900 near Palmer, Kansas to John and Ellen Schwartz. She was the eldest of four children. When Mabel was 6 years old, her family relocated in Hallam, Nebraska where her father managed a grain elevator. She finished school and grew to womanhood in this community. On August 15, 1917, Mabel was united in marriage to Albert Crist Vogel in Lincoln, Nebraska. They first met at a church service in Hallam. This union was blessed with eight children, Hazel, Mirlan, Lois, Lola, Fae, Fern, Kenneth and Melvin. In 1920 Albert, Mabel and daughter Hazel moved to Paoli where other relatives had already ventured. Their first home was built by Albert and his father John in the southeast corner of Paoli. Later, Albert and Mabel moved north of Paoli to farm, then moved back to Paoli where Albert became a mason again. In the early 1930s, Mabel worked for Ira J. Taylor, owner of the local telephone office for five years. The time came when operators were no longer needed on the switchboard, so she was without a job. In 1941, Albert and Mabel moved to Holyoke. Mabel worked in the school cafeteria providing many meals for students. Albert died of a heart attack in March of 1952 while building the chimney on the Masonic Building in Holyoke. Mabel later began working at the Burge Hotel and became the head housekeeper. She also was a night receptionist and worked the switchboard at the hotel. She gave many long hours to this job while having great pride in her work. Mabel continued working while getting her younger children through high school. After 17 years with the Burge Hotel, she retired in 1963. Walking to and from work was always a part of every day. Mabel spent many, many years making beautiful quilts and crocheting. She enjoyed giving these handmade items to her family. These creations were works of art. She also enjoyed polka music. Mabel moved to Prairie Vista Care Center on March 6, 1989 because of declining health. Making afghans continued to be a special part of her days. She lived at the center until October 2, 2000. Mabel was recently honored this year on May 2 by becoming Holyoke's newest centenarian. A celebration in her honor was truly enjoyed by Mabel, her family, friends and her nursing home family. This day will long be remembered with treasured memories. Mabel was also honored by the United States Postal Service through the local post office this past June for her accomplishment of living through all of the last century. Mabel was a member of First United Methodist Church as well as the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Ladies Golden Age and a volunteer at the nursing home. Mabel, a loving mother and grandmother, will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 35 years, Albert Vogel; an infant daughter, Lola Mae; daughter Mirlan Demmel; brother Clarence Schwartz; and sister Gladys Dalrymple. Survivors include a sister, Bessie Stevens of Sprague, Nebraska; daughters Hazel Alberts and husband Chet, Lois Kohrell, Fae Lindgren and husband Gerry, Fern Singmaster and husband Gene, all of Holyoke; sons Kenneth Vogel of Sterling and Melvin Vogel and wife Sally of Clifton; 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at First United Methodist Church in Holyoke on Monday, October 9 with Rev. Darrell Dennis officiating. Interment followed in the Holyoke Cemetery.
