Griffis, barber here for many years and noted as a composer and arranger of music, died at 11:30 a.m. today at her home at 945 Riley Street.She had been in failing health for several years. A daughter of Millard F. and Eliza Snyder Ingels, Mrs. Griffis was born at Valley Falls Dec. 26 1884. She moved to Atchison with her parents when she was a child and attended the local schools. She was married to John W. Griffis who came here from Linn, Kans., June 14, 1905 and they resided their married life in Atchison. Mr. Griffis died in 1958. Prior to her retirement in 1954, Mrs. Griffis had operated a beauty shop here for 25 years. She was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church. During her illness for the last 1 1/2 years, Mrs. Griffis had been cared for by a niece, Mrs. Dollie Lister of Arlington Va. Surviving are a daughter Mrs. Guy (Vivian) Newlin 810 North Tenth street; two sons Victor Griffis, 938 South Fourth Street, and Lt. Col. John W. Griffis who is serving in DaNang, Viet Nam, and two grandchildren. A granddaughter, Florence Joan Griffis died in 1967. Funeral services have been tentatively set for Sunday afternoon, no definite time available early this afternoon, pending the arrival of Col. Griffis from Viet Nam. The Stanton Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
