Read More	Mable Gladys Ragan, of Albion, Nebraska, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center, Albion, Nebraska. Mable, daughter of Hans Christian and Wilhemina "Minnie" (Peterson) Steiner, was born February 1, 1901 near Newman Grove, Nebraska on a farm by the Looking Glass Creek. Mable moved with her family to Newman Grove, Nebraska when her father Hans purchased a jewelry store in Newman Grove, Nebraska from his brother Fred Steiner. Mable started to school, first grade, in Newman Grove, Nebraska. A few years later Fred Steiner went into the ministry and sold his Albion (NE.) Jewelry Store to brother Hans. The family put all their possessions on the train freight car and moved to Albion, Nebraska. Mable started 3rd grade in Albion, Nebraska and her teacher was Myrtle Pittenger Gillion. Mable was left handed but the teachers made her change to the right hand. Mable was baptized and confirmed in the Albion (NE.) Methodist Church by Rev. Maine on July 6, 1913. She completed Junior High and Albion (NE.) High School and graduated in 1919. Mable had taken Normal Training to teach school but her father wanted her to work in the jewelry store. She was paid $90.00 for a month, 6 days a week. Hans kept $45.00 for her room and board. From 1919-1921 she worked at Steiner's Jewelry. On July 18, 1921, Mable married Floyd E. Ragan. Rev. Maine came to the Steiner home at 6:00 a.m. that morning. Rev. Maine and Tru and Eliz Philips had breakfast with the family and the marriage ceremony was preformed. Tru and Eliz stood up with them, and the couple left on the early train for Columbus and on to Utica, NE for their honeymoon. The couple moved to Julesburg, Colorado to start a jewelry store. After a few years they moved to Omaha, Nebraska and while her husband went to medical school (2 yrs. pre-med., 4 yrs. medical school and 1 yr. intern) Mable worked for an Omaha (NE.) Jewelry Company to put her husband through school. In 1930 they moved to Seward, Nebraska and set up a medical practice. Mable joined the Order of the Easter Star in Seward, Nebraska. One daughter, Jean Helen was born to this union. In 1936 the Ragan's were divorced and Mable and Jean moved to Albion, Nebraska. Mable once again worked for her father at the jewelry store. All four Steiner brothers were trained as watch makers and jewelers, and Mabel too learned the watch trade. Later Mable was Deputy County Treasurer for 9 years. She went to work for Kansas Nebraska Gas Company until she retired. After she retired she worked ½ days in the County Superintendents office for five years and worked for Albion (NE.) Public Library until she retired again at the age of 80. She has been a faithful member of the United Methodist Church from 1913 to 2013. A member of the Eastern Star since 1930 – Seward, Nebraska, transferred to David City and to Albion. Mable was a dedicated member and regularly attended meetings as long as her health permitted. She was an officer nearly every year from 1949-1992. She held the following offices: Ruth (3), Esther (2), Martha (1), Electra (4), Chaplain (4), Marshal (1), Treasurer (10), Associate Conductress (1), and Associate Matron (1). She was Worthy Matron of Rose Chapter #102 Albion in 1950. It was the year that the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star moved into their new temple. She was active to raise funds for the new temple and furnishings. Mable was admired because she committed the entire initiation, opening and closing ritual ceremonies, to memory. She could pro-tem any station at a moment's notice, and could recite any lecture from memory. On March 27, 2013, she was presented the Imhoff award, an honored award for the Nebraska Easter Star, for her many years of service. Mable liked to travel and took many trips around the United States and Mexico with her friend Mary Hill. She loved to play bridge and she did beautiful "crewel" needlework having completed many intricate pictures. All of her life Mable loved to work in her yard with flowers. In later years she raised hybrid hemerocallis (day lilies) and her lily bed was a show place. In July 1997, Mable moved to Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center because of leg and hip problems. She was 96 years old and had continued to care for her apartment complex and business until that fall. As of March 25, 2013, Mable Ragan was the 27th oldest in the world, according to the Gerontology Research Group based in Los Angeles, California. Mabel was preceded in death by parents, brothers: Harlan, Ross, Leroy and Paul Steiner; sisters: Ella Nore, Vera Earhardt, Alice Pelc and Betty Nygren. Mable is survived by: daughter Jean Berlik of Silverton, Oregon; grandchildren: Mike Berlik and Cindy Berlik of Oregon; great grandson Scott VonWeller of Oregon; great-great-grandsons: Carson and Quin VonWeller; nephews: Nick (Judy) Nygren of Vermillion, South Dakota and Russell (Lucille) Nore of Albion, Nebraska; niece: Paulette (Warren) Sells of Centerville, Iowa. Interment was in The Rose Hill Cemetery, Albion, Nebraska.
