SOUTHERLIN OF TIGERVILLE PASSES TIGERVILLE, June 24 - M.G. Southerlin, 69, widely known resident of the Tigerville section, died at 10 o'clock Friday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. A. Dill at Travelers Rest, following an illness of four weeks. Mr. Southerlin was a lifelong resident of the Tigerville community, and was a son of the late Phillip and Amelia Hightower Southerlin. He was engaged in farming and had served as a guard at the Tigerville Chain Gang Camp. He was a member of the Tigerville Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Laura Bates Southerlin; one son, W.B. Southerlin of Tigerville; four daughters, Mrs. Marie S. Hightower of Tigerville, Mrs. L.F. Hightower of Taylors, Mrs. W.A. Dill of Travelers Rest, and Mrs. T.D. West of Landrum; one brother, E.J. Southerlin of Greenville; five sisters, Mrs. Hattie Marlow of Greer, Mrs. Tessie Hunt, Mrs. Cora Ward, Mrs. Cary Whitmire, and Mrs. Sallie Roddy, all of Greenville, and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Tigerville Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. E.B. Crain, assisted by Dr. M.C. Donnan. Burial will be in the Church cemetery. The following nephews will meet at the Church at 2:45 o'clock and serve as pallbearers, Clyde, Alvin and Claude Southerlin, Sr., Joe Ward, Roy Roddy and Floyd Whitmire. The Deacons of Tigerville Baptist Church, the guards at the Tigerville Camp, and John P. Ashmore, H.G. Barton, T.M. Dill, W.H. Barton, C.S. West, M.W. McCracken, E.E. Neal, Dr. S.R. Gaston, T.S. Stroud, J. Thomas Duncan, Roy Crain, Pralo Wood, and the Rev. F.L. Lanford will meet at the Church at 2:45 o'clock Sunday and serve as honorary pallbearers. The body is at the residence at Tigerville, and at 2 o'clock Sunday it will be placed in the Church to remain until the hour of the service. (Transcribed by Cathy Griffith)
