OBIT MADELENE (GIES) MARCHEL Former longtime Ellensburg resident Madelene (Gies) Marchel, 85, died Thursday, April 22, 1993, at the Life Care Center in Mesa, Arizona. She was born on August 17, 1907, in Sartav, Russia, to German parents Conrad and Anna Gies. The family moved to the United States when Madelene was six years old. She married Ellis June Marchel in Spokane in 1932. They moved to Ellensburg with their children in 1944 to begin a ranching operation. She was a member of the Kittitas Assembly of God Church and later the Ellensburg Bethel Church. She taught Sunday School classes, was active in women's missionary work, and supported mission work in Mexico. Marchel was also a member of Calvary Assembly of God in Mesa. She was preceded in death by her husband in October 1971, by two sisters, Elizabeth Kramer and Martha Womach, and one stepson, Hugh Marchel. Survivors include two sons, Arvin Marchel and Jerry Marchel, both of Ellensburg; a daughter, Vivian Johnson of Mesa; a stepson, Eldon Marchel, of Ellensburg; two step-daughters, Alvretta Rommel and Glenola Gallotte, both of Wenatchee; three sisters, Katherine Miller, of Davenport, Dorothy Case, of Spokane, and Charlotte Batterman, of Wenatchee; two brothers, Henry Gies of Odessa, and Clarence Gies, of Spokane; 26 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, 1993, at Steward and Williams Chapel in Ellensburg with Pastor John Gaub of Yakima officiating.
