Wamsley and wife, was born in Jackson Township, Butler County, Iowa on October 9th, 1885, and died July 17th, 1903, of rheumatism and heart failure at the age of 17 years, 9 months and 8 days. She leaves to mourn her untimely death a father, mother, sister Vera, brother Raymond and a large circle of relatives and a host of friends. The deceased received her early education in the rural schools of Jackson Township, and then went to the high school of Clarksville for two years, attended Institute in 1902, taught school in Fremont Township during the winter term, and in Dayton Township for the spring term. She was in attendance at the State Normal Summer School when taken sick, and at the time of her death was one of Butler County's promising young schoolteachers. She was at home only nine days when she died. The suddenness of her death makes her demise still more keenly felt by those who knew her. The funeral was held at the house on Sunday, July 19th, at 10:30 am and was one of the largest funerals ever held in this vicinity, there being about 150 teams at the residence. The choir, composed of Messrs Guy Neal and Geo. Kellogg, and Misses Elva Chapin, Mable Kellogg, Edith Mitchell and Mrs. Nellie French, rendered some very fitting selections for the occasion. The sermon was delivered by Elder DeVol of Waterloo in some very well-chosen words, and the prayer was read by Rev. Luxford of Clarksville. The floral offerings were very abundant and extremely pretty, showing only in a small degree the high estimation in which the deceased was held by her many friends. Among the flowers was a pillow of roses presented by her friends and neighbors, on which was written the name "Mae". Another gift was a bouquet of carnations and smilax, sent by her boarding club of Cedar Falls, showing that no matter where Mae went, she commanded the love and esteem of all her acquaintances. Besides these, there were many other flowers given by her scholars, her former teachers and her many friends. At her funeral could be seen all her scholars standing beside her bier, while through the assembled crowd could be found her schoolmates and a great many of her former teachers, among them being Prof. Bates of the State Normal Summer School. After the services at the house, the great procession, over a mile in length, wended its way to Lynwood at Clarksville, where the last sad rites were read, and the casket of snowy white was lowered into the grave, which was most beautifully lined and decorated with roses and evergreens. Her pall bearers were selected from her young friends of the neighborhood, and were Art Yeoman, Clell Trent, Fred Wygle, Milo Mather, Frank Raisty and Tony Hagarty. And so, ends one of the most beautiful lives this community will ever see. To once meet Mae was to feel acquainted her all the time. Whether on the street or at home, she was always the same; a kind and loving word and a happy and cheerful smile for all. Her brother and sister were her pets, her home and friends her enjoyment, and to do good and become an eminent teacher were her sole ambitions. A gathering in the neighborhood was not complete without the happy and genial presence of Mae, whose bright and smiling features will be forever missed, not only by her own family, who have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community, but by all who knew her as well.
