Description	:	MaeNerva Bender, 71, Java, SD, died Friday, April 1, 2011, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital. MaeNerva Jane Hoffman, daughter of Emma (Martz) and Egart Hoffman, was born at Hosmer, SD, on December 29, 1939. She was raised and educated in Bowdle, graduating with the BHS Class of 1957. Read More	MaeNerva Bender, 71, Java, SD, died Friday, April 1, 2011, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital. MaeNerva Jane Hoffman, daughter of Emma (Martz) and Egart Hoffman, was born at Hosmer, SD, on December 29, 1939. She was raised and educated in Bowdle, graduating with the BHS Class of 1957. She then attended airline school in Minneapolis, MN. Upon completing her training she worked briefly for the US Air Force at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. She then took employment in Chicago, IL, for Eastern Airlines. MaeNerva married Russell Bender in Java on November 1, 1959, where they resided for more than 50 years. In 1972, when her youngest started school, MaeNerva took employment at the Selby Good Samaritan Center. For the first five years, she worked as a nurse's aide and the rest of her career she worked in the laundry department until she retired May, 2010. She belonged to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Java and the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA). She will be remembered for her cooking and unparalleled Kuchen making. She and Russell owned Old Church Antiques in Java. They did lots of traveling as they set up booths at flea markets and antique shows. She also enjoyed traveling by train and especially enjoyed an Amtrak trip she took to Washington and Oregon. She also looked forward to spending quality time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bender is survived by Russell, her husband of 51 years; three daughters—Susan (Dennis) Kuehl of Java, Patricia Bender of Brandon, SD, and Jennifer Kalenze of Mobridge, SD; six grandchildren, Alicia (Dustin) Mullinix, Dustin Leuning, Tyson Leuning, Jordon Leuning, Shannon Stickney, and Lee Stickney all of Sioux Falls, SD; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father on July 7, 1969, her mother on November 30, 2001, and one brother. Honorary bearers will be MaeNerva's grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as her co-workers at the Selby Good Samaritan Center. Casketbearers will be Don Jakober of Aberdeen, SD, Dan Biel and Steve Biel of Java, Dennis Schneider of Mobridge, Russell Bomesberger of Onaka, SD, and Ralph Rabenberg of Glenham, SD. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Java, with Pastor Mary Lou Gruebele leading the service. Burial follows at the Church Cemetery. Organist will be Carol Fiedler and ushers will be Carlyle Bieber and Earl Frank. Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle, is in charge of arrangements.
