Shelbina Democrat (Shelbina, MO), 1899-07-19, page 4, column 1 A Heartrending Affair. Miss Maggie Douglass, aged about eighteen years, daughter of R. W. Douglass, of Shelbyville, met with an accident which may end in death. Yesterday morning the young lady attempted to start a fire and in so doing poured coal oil from a can which contained something less than a half gallon. There was an explosion and a loud report. The young lady ran from the house into the street with the flames steaming from her. One account is that she fell from exhaustion, another is that parties overtook her, threw her upon the ground and held her until quilts were brought and wrapped about her. It seems that the oil did not saturate her clothes above the shoulders, as her face is very little burned. Every particle of clothing was burned from the lower portion of her body and limbs. Latest reports from Shelbyville yesterday was to the effect that her recovery was very doubtful. Shelbina Democrat (Shelbina, MO), 1899-07-19, page 5, column 5 Proved Fatal. Last week's DEMOCRAT contained an account of the accidental burning of Miss Maggie Douglass, at Shelbyville, Tuesday, July 18. The unfortunate young lady suffered greatly from the hour of the accident, about 6 o'clock in the morning until that hour in the afternoon when death came to her relief.
