Read More	By the careless use of coal oil in starting a fire, MAGGIE, the 7-year-old daughter of Calvin and Josephine Poffenberger, met a horrible death by burning at her home in the "Neck" about three miles below Williamsport, on Tuesday. She was burned almost into a crisp and only lived two hours afterward. She was conscious until death came to her relief. Her suffering was awful. Mr. and Mrs. Poffenberger had gone to Williamsport, the father to do work and the wife on business, leaving Maggie, who is the oldest child, in charge of her two younger brothers, for whom she was preparing breakfast when the accident occurred. She had placed the kindling in the cookstove and thoroughly saturated it with coal oil. Standing over the opening she dropped a lighted match into the stove on the fuel. In an instant the flames leaped upward igniting the child's dress. With rare presence of mind she ran out into the yard and leaped into a tub of water standing near the door and tried to extinguish the fire, but in vain. Leaping out of the tub she ran into the road screaming for help. Mrs. Reuben Palmer, a neighbor living a few hundred yards away, saw the horrible spectacle and heard her screams. She ran quickly to her and tore the burning dress from the little one's body at the same time badly burning her hands, but she succeeded in extinguishing the fire. She carried her into the house and summoned the child's parents and Dr. Boose, of Williamsport. He found the child beyond relief, but did everything to soothe the pain. Her parents are in great distress over the horrible fate of their child. They found on the stove a pan containing eggs which she was preparing to cook for breakfast. The remains were interred on Thursday morning in Riverview Cemetery, at Williamsport, where the family lived before moving to their present home recently. Services were held at the U.B. Church.
