Read More	Obituary Maitland W Hatch was born in Blandford Conn 6/17/1826 and died at the residence of his son-in-law Preston W Mitchell in this village last Friday. He came of good old revolutionary stock his ancestors on his mothers side having been leading patriots in the revolution. At the age of 9 he came to Michigan with his father;s family and when 16 years old entered the office of the Marshall Statesman as a journey man printer. After learning his trade he spent several years in various printing offices in Detroit, Milwaukee, and Battle Creek, finally returning to the Statesman office where he acted as foreman till 1860 when he came to Homer and engaged in blacksmithing with his brother James. This business he followed for five years. Later he engaged in the drug Business in Homer, which he followed for many years eventually going to Marshall in the same business with W.H Elston. He married in 1853 to Miss Sarah Elston who is left to mourn his loss. Three children were born to them if whom two, Charles O and Maggie A now Mrs Preston Mitchell, survive him. For the past five years he has not been engaged in active business but made his home with his daughter, Mrs Mitchell. He was a man of genial kindly disposition and commanded the love and esteem of all who knew him. He was converted 44 yrs ago in Marshall and joined the M.E Church of which he has been a faithful and consistent member ever since, holding various official positions. During the building of the church in this place he served on many important committees and assisted in the selection of the bell. The funeral services at the house on Monday afternoon were largely attended, and were conducted by Rev. J. Hatch, an old and respected resident of Homer, died Friday night at the residence of his son-in-law, Preston C. Mitchell. Mr. Hatch was born in Massachusetts in 1826 and came to Homer when it was known as Barneyville and was one of the first settlers. He leaves a wife, one son and one daughter. The latter's maiden name was Shepherd, her ancestors being leading patriots in the Revolution. At the age of nine years Matiland came to Michigan with his father's family. About 1842 he began a three years' apprenticeship in the office of the Marshall Statesman after which he passed three years as a tramping jour... in his rounds taking in Detroit, Battle Creek, Milwaukee, and other places. He returned to the Statesman office where he remained as foreman until 1860, when he came to Homer and for five years carried on blacksmithing with his brother James, In 67' he started in the drug trade, which business he has followed up to the present time, and is now with W. H. Elston, in Marshall. “Mait” is a practical business man and exceptionally good druggist, is a jolly fellow popular with everybody and has lots of friends. If there is any thing in which he is a little off, it is his politics- he is a republican. On 12.8.53 he married to Miss Sarah J Elston, who was born in Pennsylvania in 12/1835. They had three children: Charles O, Henry and Maggie A Charles married Sarah J Thorn and lives north of this village. Henry died in infancy Maggie A married Preston C Mitchell and lives in this place.
