Description	:	36th IA INF CIVIL WAR Marriages 1851-1856 Married Sarah Gelehart Jan 30, 1856 pg 113 Responded to the country's call for troops, giving up his law practice at the outbreak of the Civil War. He joined the 36th Iowa Infantry as a 1st Lieutenant and adjutant of the regiment. In 1863 he was promoted to rank of Major. He participated in many battles and was taken prisoner in the Spring of 1864. After the war he resumed his law practice and resided at the corner of Woodlawn Ave and N. Court Street. He participated in many battles and was taken prisoner in the Spring of 1864. After the war he resumed his law practice and resided at the corner of Woodlawn Ave and N. Court Street. (Large Yellow 2-Story house) An avid walker he gave this land that became Hamilton Park-primarily used for walking trails. He was Mayor of Ottumwa, Iowa State Senator and Ottumwa Postmaster. Major Hamilton was captured at Marks Mills Ark. in April 1864 and taken to a Confederate Prison in Tylor Texas. After 3 gruling months he escaped with two others. Capt Allen Miller of Unionville and Capt Lambert of Albia in Appanoose County, They traveled by night with nothing but the North Star to guide them, and hid during the day in thinkets. Stayed away from roads and towns and ate for 18 days nothing but green corn. 33 days later they staggared into a Federal Camp in Pine Bluffs Ark 700 miles from Tyler Texas. Hamilton survived. Capt Miller was in poor health and died shortly after their return in Sept of 1864. Capt. Lambert died from the effects of exposure in January 1865.
