Joseph Meade White (Dr) [1871-1949] Historic Fact *Jeb Stuart's Confederate Cavalry's Second Ride Around McClellan for the Woodstock Equestrian Trail* Maj. Gen. Jeb Stuart with 1,800 of his best cavalry and Pelham's Light Artillery crossed the Potomac River at McCoy's Ferry Ford, north of Williamsport, on the morning of October 10, 1862 in a heavy fog. Gen. McClellan had been holed up with his Union Army of the Potomac at Harpers Ferry since the Battle of Antietam (Sept. 17, 1862) and Stuart took this opportunity to make a point about the slowness and ineptitude of McClellan's army against the swift cavalry by making a 1O0-mile foray into enemy territory - circling McClellan's army as he had done before in Virginia. On October 12, the Confederate cavalry returned to Virginia via White's Ford, traveling cross-country from Barnesville with Union infantry and artillery to both the north and south.
