Description	:	Civil War Confederate Officer. In late December of 1860 or early January of 1861, South Carolina native Edward DuBose Brailsford volunteered and enlisted into Captain Charles Lawton Boag's Company, 1st Regiment South Carolina Volunteers (Greggs). This command was organized for 6-months of service that was to be within the boundaries of South Carolina. In late December of 1860 or early January of 1861, South Carolina native Edward DuBose Brailsford volunteered and enlisted into Captain Charles Lawton Boag's Company, 1st Regiment South Carolina Volunteers (Greggs). This command was organized for 6-months of service that was to be within the boundaries of South Carolina. Assigned to the lowcountry of South Carolina, these volunteers were eyewitnesses to the 1st firing on the "Star of the West", and later, the inauguration of Civil War with the bombardment of Fort Sumter in April of 1861. With his 6-month enlistment expired, Brailsford, along with scores of his fellow South Carolinians, re-enlisted into the 1st Regiment South Carolina Infantry, Provisional Army (later McCreary's), and was subsequently accepted into Confederate service. With a military education from the United States Military Academy, Brailsford was elected a 1st lieutenant on July 20, 1861 and was assigned to Company I - "The Richardson Guards". In Virginia, during the June 27, 1862 battle at Gaines Mill, Captain Boag was killed-in-action. Consequently, Brailsford, who also received a wound at Gaines Mill, was promoted to captain to succeed the fallen Boags. While commanding his company at the battle of Spotsylvania (May 12, 1864), Captain Brailsford was felled with a dangerous wound to his right shoulder. He was confirmed a major on January 25, 1865 to rank from June 19, 1864. In the waning days of the war, he received a third wound on April 2, 1865 at a place called Sutherland's Station, Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Seven days later, he and his regiment, after serving the entire war, were surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Courthouse, VA.
