Rosenmarkle, of LaVale, formerly of Leesburg, Fla., or "Rosie" as he was known to all those who knew and loved him, filed his final flight plan early Thursday morning, March 17, 2005. He entered the last leg of his journey to join his beloved Kathryn and Cyndi. Ell had been a patient at Memorial Hospital as the result of a broken hip. We are thankful for the compassionate care that he received. Born in Cumberland, Feb. 7, 1918, he was the son of the late C. Ward and Clara Diggs Rosenmarkle. In 1979, he retired from Tri-State Mine & Mill, where he was in industrial sales. Previous to that he had been the company pilot for Allegany Instrument Company and also worked as parts manager for Gurley's Dodge and Plymouth Dealership, for 14 years. Taught by the manager of Mexico Farms Airport, the late Bill Rannells, he learned to fly in 1938. He held a multi-engine flight instructor's and instrument rating and received his commercial license in 1940. He was the flying instructor for the Allegany Flying Club for many years and remained a member from 1963 to 1978. Ell taught Civil Air Patrol cadets and others till he was drafted into the Air Force. He was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council. His service record during World War II included teaching at Vaudergraf Field in Tuscaloosa, Ala. In 1943 he was transferred to Brooks Field, Texas as a flight instructor. From there he was transferred to Goodfellow Field, Texas, in 1944, where he ferried planes and did some instructing. In 1945, he was transferred to Nashville, Tenn., and then to New York. From there he flew to Casablanca by way of Newfoundland and the Azores through Karachi, India to Chabua in the Asian Valley, where he flew the Hump to Kiangwan, China. After retiring from the Air Force as a Major in 1945, he resumed his career as a flight instructor. In 1966, he earned his instrument flight instructor's license. On March 1, 1967, Ellsworth found the Costello Aztec that had crashed while on a search mission. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold and Nelson; wife, Kathryn, daughter Cyndi; great-grandson, Shawn J. Wrachford; and son-in-law, Bob Shoemaker. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Shoemaker of LaVale, and Kathryn Miltenberger and husband Larry, Pittsburgh, Pa.; two sons, Robert and wife Jacque of Ladysmith, Va., and David and wife Victoria of Annandale, Va. He was the proud grandfather of 15 grandchildren, Kim Shoemaker, Kelly Shoemaker, Kerry Shoemaker-Davis and husband Sean, Tabitha Fish and husband Dwayne, Cynthia Jarrell and husband Steve, Patti Shoemaker, Sandi Shoemaker, Scott, Colin and Trysten Rosenmarkle, Vincent and Kate Miltenberger, and Charles, Christopher and Kirstyn Conway. He also had nine great-grandchildren; and is survived by a special and loving friend, Dolores Jessen of Leesburg. A memorial service will be conducted in the Christ Lutheran Church, on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Pastor Charles A. Erzkus and Pastor Elizabeth Welsch officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the combined veterans honor guard. The family wishes that forms of sympathy be memorials to Christ Lutheran Church, Vocke Road & I-68, LaVale, MD 21502.
