Read More	* IN LOVING MEMORY OF * Major Moyne Gladys Darnell was born on Wednesday; May 5, 1915 in Marshalltown; Marshall County, Iowa. She was the daughter of: Robert and Pearl (Thorn) Darnell. As a little child of four years of age, she began attending The Salvation Army in Marshalltown, Iowa. It was there that she was converted at the age of eleven and soon became a Corps Cadet helping in all Army meetings and being put in charge of the young people's work. Following high school, Moyne moved to Mason City, Iowa to become the Corps Assistant for the corps there under the leadership of Major Frederick Bailey. (She had lived with the Bailey's while they were stationed in Marshalltown). It was from Mason City, Iowa that Moyne received the call to become an Officer. She entered the School for Officer Training in Chicago, Illinois in September of 1943 in the "Liberty" Session. On June 12, 1944, she was Commissioned to the rank of Probationary Lieutenant and sent to Fargo, North Dakota as the Assistant Officer as her first appointment. In her cadet final report she was described as "the rough and ready type, very sincere and a cheerful, energetic worker." Further appointments were as follows: Winona, Minnesota as the Assistant Officer; Minneapolis #1 & 2 as the Assistant Officer; to the Camp in Minneapolis; Crookston, Minnesota as the Assistant Officer; Devil's Lake, North Dakota as the Corps Officer; Crookston, Minnesota as the Corps Officer; Faribault, Minnesota as the Corps Officer; Mandan, North Dakota as the Corps Officer; Watertown, South Dakota as the Corps Officer; Huron, South Dakota as the Corps Officer; Ottumwa, Iowa as the Corps Officer and to her last appointment at the City Coordinator's Office in Des Moines, Iowa with responsibilities for the Senior Program. She retired from active service from Des Moines, Iowa on June 30, 1979 to Marshalltown, Iowa. Marking special events of her years of distinction in corps work, she was the first woman ever to pray before the North Dakota Senate. Then, while serving in South Dakota, Major Darnell was honored for her special work with Indian women and homeless Indian children. In Mandan, South Dakota she was recognized for this work at a special Appreciation Day in her honor. In retirement Major Darnell continued to be very active at her local corps in Marshalltown, Iowa. She was their dedicated corps pianist. In fact, it would not be overstated to say that she has become "Miss Salvation Army" to this community. "Slow down" has never been in her vocabulary. She has given exemplary service to the Iowa Veterans' Home bringing music and laughter into halls often filled with sadness and fear. Always in uniform, she has brought comfort to many. She will be greatly missed! Major Moyne Gladys Darnell, age 92, was Promoted to Glory on Tuesday; February 12, 2008 due to a short illness at the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center in Marshalltown, Iowa. Those left to mourn her passing are: Her one brother: Wilbur Darnell. Her dear friend: A/Captain Jean Mercadante. Also, several nieces, nephews and cousins. In eternal life, Moyne joins her parents, her brothers: Robert, Von, Jr., and Wilbur. Also her sisters: Loretta Winters and Genevieve Darnell. May they rest in peace. Visitation will be from: 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. on Saturday; February 16, 2008 at the Salvation Army in Marshalltown, Iowa. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. also at the Salvation Army. Interment will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown, Iowa. Memorials in the Major's name may go to the Salvation Army. For condolences, please visit the funeral home's website.
