Description	:	Chaplain MAJ (Ret) Roland Benjamin Armstrong, son of the late Benjamin Franklin Phillips and Elsie Marie (Farris) Armstrong, was born June 19, 1919 in Windsor, Missouri. He grew up in several Missouri and Kansas towns, graduating from Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia, Missouri. Roland loved to learn and he attended several different schools during his education years. Read More	Chaplain MAJ (Ret) Roland Benjamin Armstrong, son of the late Benjamin Franklin Phillips and Elsie Marie (Farris) Armstrong, was born June 19, 1919 in Windsor, Missouri. He grew up in several Missouri and Kansas towns, graduating from Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia, Missouri. Roland loved to learn and he attended several different schools during his education years. He attended Casey Jones Aeronautical School, the University of Missouri, and Oklahoma Baptist University and in 1950 graduated from Central Baptist Theological Seminary. On February 4, 1945, Roland was united in marriage to Etheleen Enloe on the US Air Base in Galveston, Texas. They shared over 63 years of marriage together and were blessed with three children: Susan, Mark and Sarah. In early 1945, Roland enlisted in the United States Army and served his country faithfully until his retirement in 1973. He served his country as a Chaplain and brought great comfort to the many soldiers he came in contact with. For his faithful service, he earned several awards and commendations; some of which include: National Defense Service Medal w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal w/2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/4 Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Bronze Star Medal w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Air Medal and 2 Overseas Bars. He had attained the rank of Major at the time of his retirement. While in the military, Roland was a member of the Royal Air Force, the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a U.S. Army Chaplain. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. As a teen, Roland accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Sedalia, Missouri. In recent years, he became a member of the First Baptist Church of Waynesville and was instrumental in the establishment of the Spanish Christian Lighthouse Center, led by Rev. Benito Perez. Prior to becoming a chaplain, Roland served as a missionary, and after military retirement, as an adjunct university professor at Drury University. He also pastored New Friendship Baptist Church near Waynesville, Missouri for a time. In his spare time, he enjoyed photography, reading poetry and literature and studying foreign languages. Most importantly, he treasured those times that he could spend with his family. Roland went home to be with his Lord at 8:50 P.M. Wednesday, September 3, 2008 in the Sunset Village of the Ozarks of St. Robert, Missouri at the age of 89 years, 2 months and 15 days. Chaplain Armstrong was dearly loved, but will be sadly missed by his wife: Etheleen Armstrong of the home; three children: Mark Armstrong and Susan A. Marino, both of Waynesville, MO and Sarah Wilson and her husband John of St. Louis, MO; four siblings: Carl Phillips and his wife Donna of Shawnee, KS , Marie McDermott of Shawnee, KS, Betty Warmington of Independence, MO and Billie Hinrichs of Overland Park, KS; five grandchildren: Anthony Marino, Michelle Rutherford, Sean Skaggs, Justin Skaggs and Tracy Wilson; three great grandchildren: Ben & Isabella Marino and Kayla Rutherford; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Roland was preceded in death by his step-father: Henry Armstrong and three brothers: Earl Franklin, Donald Joe and Charles Wilbur Armstrong. Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 8, 2008 in the First Baptist Church of Waynesville, Missouri with Dr. Dennis Crowder and Rev. Benito Perez officiating. Soloist Becky Lercher sang "He Leadeth Me", "Rock of Ages" and "Church in the Wildwood". Serving as escorts were Tom Hazlett, John Howard McDermott, Dennis Abernathy, Roy Dodston, John Abernathy, Jim Armstrong, John Wilson, Sean Skaggs and Derrel Roth. Burial with military honors was held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, September 8, 2008 in the Enloe Cemetery of Russellville, Missouri with Chaplain (MAJ) Ryan Sarenpa officiating. Military honors were provided by the United States Army of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.
