OBITUARY: Nevada Enening Journal Virgil Loren Emerson, son of Glenn adn Effie Emerson was born Nov. 19, 1916 in the Shipley neighborhood near Nevada. His death occurred on July 28, 1943. His early life was all spent in Shipley community where he attended Shipley School graduating with the high school class of 1936. As a student there he was active in athletics being an outstanding basketball player. Following his graduation from high school her entered Iowa State college where he studied for three years. In Nov. 1939 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps starting his training at Tulsa, Okla. From there he went to Randolph and Kelly Fields graduating as a 2nd Lieutenatn in July of 1940. He was an instructor for three months at Randolph Field. Following this he was transferred to Moffatt Field in California and various other moves followed, finally going overseas in April 1943. He was based in England and was with the 96th Bomb Group. On July 28, 1943, he was shot down over the North Sea. A 2ND OBITUARY: NEVADA EVENING JOURNAL Funeral services for Maj. Virgil L. Emerson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Emerson of near Cambridge, will be conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Methodist Church at Nevada with pastor O.E. Cooley, in charge. Graveside services will be conducted in the Nevada Cemetery by the Ames American Legion post. Pallbearers will be members of the Legion. The air unit of the Iowa national guard will offer an air slute at the cemetery about 3:15 in honor of Major Emerson, who was a group commander (bombers) with the 8th air force in England at the time of his death. A graduate of Shipley high school. Major Emerson had attended Iowa State college for three years at th time he entered military service in 1939 as an aviation cadet. Survivors include his parents and two sisters, Mrs. Beulah Samo of Ames and Mrs. Bernita O'Malley of Oskaloosa. The body will remain at the Morfoot funeral home, Nevada until time for the services. The Nevada Veterans of Foreign Wars post will provide an escort for the body from the depot to Morfoot's.
