Walter Joseph Meyer, Major USMC Ret, 3/16/17 - 6/8/10, resident of Saratoga, CA, died June 8th at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Maui HI. He was 93 years old. Walter and his sister, the late Francis Meyer Lesley Edwards were born and raised in Elma, Washington. As a teenager Walter helped his father run the town's grocery store and delivered groceries to many of its residents. Having an interest in flight and airplanes, he followed his sister to Stanford University where he planned to study aeronautical engineering. However, during his freshman year he and one of his professors decided he was more suited for flying planes than designing engines. He graduated with an economics degree with the class of 1939. Immediately following graduation he enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps and was chosen for its Pensacola Flight School. As a commissioned officer one of his first projects was to install and test a new technology, a "portable landing strip" or "Marston Mat" in the Solomon Islands. Upon the successful completion of this project the CO asked him what he would like to do next. He said he wanted to join the Marine fighter squadron that was flying F4F Wildcats in the Solomons, a request that was granted. This was followed by several months flying combat missions from the Island of Funafuti of Tuvalu. He was then asked to return to Mojave California to assemble and command the Marine Fighting Squadron 121. The VMF-121 was originally activated in 1941. The Green Knights began combat operations flying the F4F Wildcat during the Battle of Guadalcanal and later Bougainville. However, in 1944 VMF-121 needed to be completely refitted with men and equipment. During the summer of 1944 Major Meyer trained 50 pilot recruits to fly and land Corsairs safely on airstrips and qualified the pilots for aircraft carrier duty. The 300 man VMF-121, now equipped with new Goodyear-produced FG-1A Corsairs, was shipped aboard the USS Kwajalein then reactivated to combat duty in August 1944 at Turtle Bay on the island of Espirito Santo. Soon they flew to the island of Emirau then finally Peleliu in November of 1944 under Major Meyer's command. For the next year Major Meyer personally lead numerous combat flight missions over the Palau and Yap Islands earning him not only the Distinguished Flying Cross but also the highest respect and devotion from the his VMF121. After the war he joined United Airlines specializing in Hawaii/California service from the time this first became available. Captain Meyer also worked briefly with Alaska Airlines during the late 1940s, piloting non-scheduled flights around the world. He married a United Airlines Stewardess, Helena Jeanne St. Martin in 1945, having been introduced to her by his sister Francis. She passed away in 1998. For the last six years Walter lived with his daughter and son-in-law Michelle and Dennis Kleid, and granddaughter Adrienne Kleid in their Burlingame and Maui Homes. Walter is also survived by his son Michael Meyer, Daughter-in-law Brenda Sue Edmonds Meyer, three grandchildren, Michael Joseph (Joe) Meyer of Fort Collins, CO, Gary A. Meyer, and Jaime Michelle Meyer, as well as two great grandchildren Joseph Dawson Meyer, and Dominique Smith all living near Jackson California, and two nephews, Mark Lesley of Norfolk, VA and Tay Lesley of Culver City, CA. Walter Meyer will be interred with military honors at a short ceremony beginning 10:00 AM August 7th, 2010 at the Gate Of Heaven Catholic Cemetery (gravesite St. Gregory section) 22555 Cristo Rey Dr. Los Altos, CA. 94024.
