"Stokes" was born in Greenville County, SC on January 15, 1917, a son of the late James A. and Rebecca B. Stokes. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lillian Myers Stokes, a son, Warren Myers Stokes, brothers Boyd, Cecil A. and Louie J. Stokes, sisters Martha Ann Stokes, Etta S. Wooten, and Cora S. Dill. He was educated in the Greenville County public schools and was a 1939 graduate of Clemson. A World War II... "Stokes" was born in Greenville County, SC on January 15, 1917, a son of the late James A. and Rebecca B. Stokes. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lillian Myers Stokes, a son, Warren Myers Stokes, brothers Boyd, Cecil A. and Louie J. Stokes, sisters Martha Ann Stokes, Etta S. Wooten, and Cora S. Dill. He was educated in the Greenville County public schools and was a 1939 graduate of Clemson. A World War II veteran, he was a navigator on B-24 Liberators with the 93rd Bombardment group, US Army Air Corps, and flew 26 combat missions over Europe. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation and retired with the rank of Major. Following the war, he taught vocational agriculture in the public schools of Florence County. He earned his Masters in Agriculture Education from Clemson in 1973 and retired in 1979 as Assistant Principal of Lake City Junior High School, having taught for a total of 38 years. He was a member of the Lake City First Baptist Church where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was also active in the Lions Club, VFW and several educational organizations. In 2008 he was recognized by the American Legion for 60 years of continuous membership. He is survived by his brother, Arnold Stokes (Sarah), sisters Gladys S. Powell, Colleen S. Banks and Virginia S. Heath, his daughter, Harolyn S. Whitehead (Leon) of Wake Forest, NC, daughter-in-law Ruth Ann Stokes of Murrells Inlet, SC, grandchildren Kathryn S. "Kes" Crumpler (Jay) of Lake City, Samantha W. Probst of Virginia Beach, VA., Marie L. Whitehead of Washington, DC, David Whitehead (Teresa) of Greensboro, NC and Barry Whitehead of Newark, NJ, step-grandchildren Le Miczek,Jr. of Miami, FL, Stephanie M. Fisher (Timmy) of East Conway and Ashley M. McDougald (John) of Columbia five great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 4 at 3:30 PM in Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 1:30 - 3:30 PM. Burial will follow at the Scranton United Methodist Church cemetery.
