McMillan, a native of Horry County, came to Marion as quite a young man. What he did to earn his bread in those misty days, is not known to his descendants - up to the time he acquired a farm. It seems that back in 1850 a farmer named Smith, along with many other Americans, succumbed to the gold fever. John Sutter had accidentally stumbled upon gold nuggets at a mill the latter operated in California - beginning a race for fame and fortune which is unparalleled in history. Smith had 40 acres and a mule. Eyeing McMillan's fine bay horse - which the latter had raised from an awkward colt - and a nicely finished wagon which McMillan had fashioned by hand, Smith offered to trade even-stephen. Mr. McMillan, with good Scotch sense, knew the horse would die and the wagon eventually jolt to pieces. The young man knew a bargain when he saw one, and the deal was made. Smith explained that he needed the traveling outfit to reach the gold fields. And reach them Smith did. Some 6 months after Smith loaded his gear and turned the bay's head west, Mr. McMillan received a letter from California, in which the former Marion County farmer reported reaching his goal. The fact that he (Smith) had stopped each Sunday and allowed his horse to rest, resulted (said Smith) in his reaching the (fool's) mecca, ahead of those impatient souls who pushed on until their steeds literally dropped dead of exhaustion. Smith may have struck it rich. On the other hand, he might have fallen victim to the fevers and the violence of the gold camps. At all events, Marion County never heard from him again. The very same Malcolm S. McMillan was, some ten years later, commissioned by the Confederate Government to build the ill fated gunboat, C.S.S. Pee Dee - which, as history relates, was scuttled in the river for which it was named, by its own crew and a few miles west of Marion, in order that it might not fall into the hands of the enemy. So pleased was the Confederacy with the handiwork of Malcolm McMillan, that he was transferred to the port of Wilmington, N.C. and placed in a supervisory position over the building of other Southern warcraft. But here misfortune overcame the talented Marion Countian in early 1864, when he came down with pneumonia. Today it is but a short auto jaunt to the Cape Fear River town in Tarheelia; but at that distant period the Pee Dee shipbuilder fell, undoubtedly, an exile from home to some extent. Upon his insistence, Malcolm S. was placed aboard a train and dispatched in the direction of home. The present head of the clan recalls his father telling him that the train bearing his grandfather was halted at that point closest to the sick mans home; and that Malcolm was lifted from the train and set upon the ground in the middle of the night. So weak as Malcolm that he sat himself upon the ties. Help was not long in coming. A neighboring farm lady, investigating the unusual and unscheduled train stop, found him alternately burning and freezing in the chill October night. Carried to his home, Malcolm McMillan died within the encompass of that day, October 7, 1864. If the circumstances under which McMillan was found seem heartless, it was a heartless time. Trains were ill-manned and schedules were shot to blazes. Oscar F. Johnston, CSN, in command. - 28 February 1865 CSS Pee Dee got under way for her one and only combat voyage. She steamed 56 miles up river to Cheraw, South Carolina to cover the flank during the withdrawal of Lt. General Hardee's army. - Final Disposition, probably destroyed, 18 March 1865 by Confederates nears the Mars Bluff Navy Yard, 110 miles above Georgetown, S.C. upon the evacuation of Charleston.
