Due to Iowa's high Covid positivity rate, a memorial service will be held at a later time. Malinda was born November 8, 1926 to Henry and Lena (Brand) Brandt. Raised with four older brothers on a farm southeast of Hubbard, Malinda was a typical Iowa farm girl who grew up milking cows, tending chickens and helping raise a garden. Her favorite pastime, however, was riding her pony, Pet. Mud Swamp School, Number 6, was the name of the one-room schoolhouse in Grant Township Malinda attended as a child. After she and her parents moved to town, Malinda attended and graduated from Hubbard High School. Malinda met her husband of 73 years, Curtis Bauer, at a roller rink in Iowa Falls. They dated until Curt was inducted into the Navy during World War II. Imagine the talk around Hubbard the day Malinda opened a package at the post office and discovered an engagement ring and matching wedding band from Curt who was stationed in Hawaii at the end of the war. The couple married upon Curt's return home, January 23, 1948, the coldest day of the year. Curt and Malinda then settled in Zearing where they raised their family, Lee and Jan. An avid gardener, Malinda was known throughout the community for her large gardens and the plentiful produce she shared with friends and neighbors. She grew everything from asparagus to zucchini as well as raspberries and strawberries. One year with the encouragement of Lee and Jan, she and Curt even grew peanuts. Another year the special crop was blue potatoes. Anything left at the end of the season was pickled, canned or frozen and then stored in one of two freezers. At any given moment, you would find each packed to the brim with delicious homemade pies, cookies, you name it. While most people would describe Malinda as a reluctant traveler, she loved visiting new places and meeting new people. Best of all, she loved sharing endless stories about her adventures. Whether she was talking about a family camping trip to a national park or an excursion to one of the countless wonders of the world, Malinda never met a stranger and would strike up a conversation with everyone she met. As a result of their interest in travel, Malinda and Curt became charter members of the Central Iowa Friendship Force. They were part of the first group of Iowans who traveled to Ireland with Miss Lillian Carter in 1977. In turn, they hosted guests from Ireland, Venezuela, Australia, Russia and Turkey. A lifelong member of the United Church of Christ, Malinda was baptized and married in the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church (now Zion UCC) of Hubbard. After moving to Ames in 1990, she transferred her membership to the Ames United Church of Christ. In Zearing, Malinda was an member of the Eastern Star and Legion Auxiliary. Malinda also actively participated in the Democratic Party and accompanied Jan on many of her Democratic Party pursuits. As much as Malinda enjoyed all of the activities described above, the role she cherished the most was that of being a grandmother to her two granddaughters, Erin and Amy. According to Erin, "Grammy was the funnest member of the family." Someone else proclaimed, "The universe will not be the same without Malinda Bauer in it." Malinda's spitfire personality, adventurous spirit and unconditional love will be missed by all who were blessed to have known her. Malinda is survived by her husband, Curtis; son, Lee Bauer and daughter-in-law, Marli Mesa; daughter, Jan Bauer; and two loving grandchildren, Erin Luisa Bauer and Amy Elizabeth Bauer. She also leaves two nieces, Joyce Frohwein and Sharon Ingebritson and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Lena Brandt; an infant brother, Arthur Brandt; four brothers, Vernie, Harold, Rudolf and Wilbert Brandt; four sisters-in-law, Elsie, Iona, Esther and Kathryn Brandt; a nephew, Robert Brandt; and two nieces, Eljean Brandt and Lavonne Danger. Those wishing to express condolences are encouraged to consider directing a donation in Malinda's name to her favorite charitable organization – The Bridge Home, formerly known as the Emergency Residence Project (ERP).
