Garland, daughter of Charles H. Banner and Susie Borland Rhodes Banner, was born April 20, 1895 at Shenandoah, Iowa. She passed from this life on July 26, 1987 at Prairie Vista Care Center of Holyoke, having been a patient there slightly more than two years and seven months. She suffered from severe arthritis and had been in declining health for many years. Mamie attended Shenandoah schools, graduating as valedictorian of her high school class of 1914. Intending to become a teacher, she enrolled at Simpson College in Iowa, where she completed two years of classes and was a member of Alpha Chi Sorority. As a young girl, she journeyed to Holyoke to visit her Borland relatives. Here she met her future husband, George F. Garland. They were married September 5, 1916 after a five-year courtship. The newlyweds lived with the senior Garlands while their new home on Interocean Avenue was being built. They lived in this home from 1917 until 1964. At an early age, Mamie became a member of the Methodist Church at Shenandoah but after her marriage, she was united with First Baptist Church of Holyoke, where the Garland family had been founding members. She remained an active member as long as her health allowed. She was very interested in education, teaching a boys' Sunday School class for several years. She did substitute teaching in the local high school Latin classes and did private tutoring for students. She loved poetry and enjoyed quoting it to her friends. She wrote original poetry as well. Mamie Garland was very active in community organizations, having been a long time member and serving in the offices of Chapter BM, PEO Sisterhood; Order of Eastern Star; Delphian and Hyperian Clubs and Gold Star Mothers. She had the honor of serving as Grand Electra in Grand Chapter of Colorado, Order of Eastern Star in 1947. Mamie was an avid gardner as long as she was physically able. She took joy from her beautiful flowers and was always eager to share them with others. For several years in the mid 1940s, she served as horticulture superintendent at the Phillips County Fair. During their retirement years, George and Mamie Garland enjoyed extensive travel, often taking tours with friends. They spent many winters in Arizona and enjoyed keeping in touch with new acquaintances. Mr. and Mrs. George F. Garland were the parents of two sons: George Banner and Gordon Charles. Gordon was killed in 1942 while in flight training with the United States Navy. Mr. Garland passed away in May 1973, having been in failing health for more than two years. George B. died of cancer in 1976. Mrs. Garland is survived by two grandsons, Gordon Garland of Denver and Brent Garland and wife Ronda of Golden; two great grandchilren, Phillips and Stephanie Garland of Holyoke; a few nieces and nephews who reside out of the state as well as close and devoted friends of long standing. Services were held Wednesday, July 29 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Holyoke, with Pastor Doug Myers officiating.
