Description	:	Catalonian Volunteer with Portolá Expedition in 1769 Manuel Butrón y Ros was the son of José Butrón and Josefa Ros, both of Orihuela, Valenciana, Spain. Manuel was born at Molins, a small village just outside Orihuela. He enlisted as a Catalonian Volunteer with Captain Agustín Callis about 1766 and sailed for New Spain (México) from Cádiz May 27, 1767. He participated in the Sonoran Expedition with Captain Callis in late 1767. When Captain Pedro Fáges assumed command of the Catalonian Volunteers in 1769, Manuel was one of only 17 original members of the regiment who had sailed from Cádiz in 1767.... When Captain Pedro Fáges assumed command of the Catalonian Volunteers in 1769, Manuel was one of only 17 original members of the regiment who had sailed from Cádiz in 1767. He accompanied Captain Fáges as part of the 1769 Portolá Expedition to Alta California and was posted to the Monterey Presidio. While at Monterey he married Margarita María Domínguez, an Indian neophyte, at Mission San Carlos (Carmel) May 20, 1773 (SC Marriage 00180). When the Catalonian Volunteers were ordered to Tépic, Nayarit (México), in late 1773, Manuel requested a transfer to the soldados de cuera ("leather jackets") so he could remain in Alta California with his wife. With the help of Father Junípero Serra, it was approved and the Catalonian Volunteers left Monterey in June 1774 without him. Two other Catalonian Volunteers also stayed behind with their Indian wives at Monterey, Domingo Aruz and José Antonio Yorba. Because of his close association with Fr. Serra, when Manuel died at Monterey he was buried beneath the floor of the Carmel Mission Chapel (left side facing altar) January 5, 1793 (SC Burial 00934).
