Description	:	MANUEL MARSHALL (Manuel Francisco Marcelino), the originator of the Marshall family line in Placer County, was born in Faial on August 28, 1856, to Francisco Jose and Maria Marcelino. He was educated in Faial, and then came to California in 1872 where he worked on ranches outside of Sacramento for three years. Read More	MANUEL MARSHALL (Manuel Francisco Marcelino), the originator of the Marshall family line in Placer County, was born in Faial on August 28, 1856, to Francisco Jose and Maria Marcelino. He then went to Placer County where he worked on the railroads out of Newcastle for eleven years before buying his first piece of land, a 10-acre farm. In Newcastle he met his first wife, PHILOMINA ARMES (Minnie), born in Flores August 31, 1864, to Manuel P. and Frances L. (Naia) Armas. Manuel Marshall and Philomina Armes were married at St. Joseph's Church in Auburn May 15, 1881. They had nine children: Mary Frates, Joseph A., Minnie Fratis, Josie, Clara Lewis, Frances Azevedo, Julia Perry, Caroline Stassi Hutchison, and Jennie, who died at age 10. As the need grew for a larger farm, the family added three more pieces to it 27 acres, 38 acres, and 61 acres, to a total of 130 acres. They became very socially involved and well known in the Newcastle Portuguese community. Many a new immigrant lived and worked on the Marshall ranch until they were able to start on their own. Marshall was one of the founders and original trustees of the Newcastle Portuguese Hall. Their names can be found on the founders' lists of virtually every Portuguese club or lodge in Placer County. Today the main square in central Newcastle has a plaque bearing the name Marshall Square. Minnie died February 15, 1902. Manuel later married ROSIE MARSHALL and had two children, Albert and Theresa. Manuel died October 3, 1944 at age 88. Daughter Josie MARSHALL, born June 15, 1886, was taken in by her godparents, Manuel and Ignacia Armas, when her mother died at a young age. She became very attached to her godparents, and that worried her father, so she moved in with her family in her pre-teen years. She was known to be quite a prankster, always getting into mischief. Once, while in Sacramento visiting relatives, she climbed into the attic with her brother Joe. While playing, they fell through the ceiling into the main floor of the house, causing quite a stir with the family below. She married Joseph Perry, and after his death married Manuel Paulino. (See PERRY and ALVERNAZ.) Son Joseph A. MARSHALL was born in Newcastle June 2, 1884. Upon completing his schooling at age 14, he went to work with the Kellogg Fruit Co., then with Pioneer Fruit Co., and later with the Earl Fruit Co., first as house man and then as manager of their Newcastle plant. Under his management the company shipped 360 cars of fruit in 1923. He owned valuable real estate in Newcastle and a 53-acre fruit ranch.
